My sister applied for the Southwest Visa and was shocked to be denied. She knew her credit score was very high and she did not have anything on her credit report. She got her letter and it stated she had a foreclosure/bankruptcy, and several late payments. They said the info was from Equifax, so she checked her report and neither of those are there(she has never had either of these happen) She checked her credit score and it is 799.

They had the right SS number, address, etc., so what can cause this? She is going to call them this week, but I'm wondering if anyone has known this to happen.

Something similar to this happened to my DH. Back in 2003, when we were engaged and looking to buy our first house, one of the three credit companies was showing that my DH had opened a few credit cards, charged things and then never paid on the cards. Also, it was showing he had taken out a car loan and again, never paid on it. None of this was true. My DH was advised by the bank that did our pre-approval to contact the credit company (I think it was TransUnion) and explain the situation. DH did that and they opened up an "investigation". It took awhile but everything did get resolved and we were able to buy a house. I think what happened was someone else with the same name as my DH was using his social security number to get the credit cards/loans. When the initial credit report was pulled, an address was showing for my DH for a place he never lived. We think that address was for the person who used his social. He hasn't had any trouble since. We check our credit as often as we can for free just to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

Your sister should contact the credit company immediately. Someone may have used her social without her even knowing as in my husband's case. Good luck. I know how much of a pain this can be.

she may want to get in touch with her local Credit Bureau. I had this happen waaaaay back (right out of college). I called to find out the reason for decline, was told it was the failure to declare mortgage, etc. Come to find out, I was back at home, had the same last name and first initial as my Dad. At that time they were using first initial, last name and address to run credit, hence the confusion. My Mom and I went down to the CB, they had half of my info on Dad's, some of his on mine and some stuff just wrong in general. It took a long time to get it straightened out but we were finally able to do so. Definitely worth pursuing!

Does she have a mom or grandmother or someone with the same or a very similar name? That might be the root of the problem. My husband and his dad both have the same first name and middle initial but different middle names, and even though he hasn't lived with his parents in over 20 years, we STILL have problems with their things showing up on our credit report and vice versa (esp. troublesome were store charge accounts his parents had with Sears & JC Penney). Luckily, neither we nor they were ever deliquent on anything, but it still caused problems with available credit.

If it's not something like that, she should look at her whole credit report very carefully, someone may be using her SS# in an illegal manner and it might be pretty much a mess to straighten out.

Call the credit bureau listed on the denial letter. Have the report you pulled from them handy so that you can use the report number to get through the phone system.

They can check and see if there is any indication of some wrong data under that social. You might be dealing with a person who has a similar social and things can get crossed if the creditors make typos. Also some companies don't submit data under social security numbers and that can cause confusion when family members have the same or similar names.

It's not that wrong information is on the credit report. She already pulled it the reason for denial was not on there AT ALL. Even if someone else used her info frauduently, wouldn't it show on the credit report? She checked the one the SW Visa letter said kept her from getting approved.

She could start by calling the Visa company and talking to them about it.

Some people are denied when the companies do an identity verification and they use the wrong data or someone else's name comes up due to one or more typos. The trouble is that the denial letters are often very generic and don't say much. Most companies will accept proof of identity when the results aren't clear but they are all different.

A few years ago, there was a data breach in our little town. The people affected by the data breach were given free credit protection services through a company for a year following the data breach. A friend of mine went to fill out a credit application and was denied because her information could not be 'verified' because of some hold on her information through the credit protection service. No red flags showed up, because there were none on her account. The denial was because the credit company couldn't get a 'verification' from its usual source. It was very odd, but eventually she got it resolved.

I believe the company declining you the credit has to provide you with a copy of the credit report listing those issues. Ask for that copy, and that should tell you where the error is.
