Creative budget types- "half" birthday present?

I found out yesterday my son's invited to a half birthday party today. (Last minute decision as a way to get a friend who's moving to be able to go to birthday boy's party.) I am quite sure neither the mom nor the birthday boy (who will be 13... in January) is expecting presents. (Esp since they will all be doing a boy scout service project most of the day...)

I wanted to come up with something witty and clever to include with the a birthday card I thought we could cut in half. Any ideas for quick/simple and can be bought at Rite Aid, the grocery store, or a dinky Walmart? No time to run any where else!

Just looking for something inexpensive, couple of dollars, as a joke. We will be celebrating his actual birthday come January as well. I was thinking 1/2 of a big candy bar or 1/2 pound of M&M's, etc, but he doesn't eat sweets. A half dollar? but not sure I could find one without running all over. Or 12 1/2 of ~something~? (a dozen eggs plus an extra half of one, haha)

Donuts? Maybe only 6 or do a dozen and cut an extra one in half?

Or get a box of crayons and break them in half?

Or come up with some present that you can give half now and half on his real birthday.

Or just get him a game and take out half the pieces(but you can give it to him later)

Or half a deck of cards.

Sorry not so good but it's early.

I'm interested to know how it turns out. We are planning a half bday party for DS next year. Since he's a summer baby so we thought having a party during the year so he can have fun with his friends.

Hmmm interesting, I have never thought of having a half birthday party for my 3 kiddos with summer birthdays (one late June and two late August). Their birthdays always seem great for parties. But we have seriously contemplated throwing half birthday parties for our December kid at some point in the future (she is only 3 now, so less of an issue now and more a thought for the furture).

Thanks all- I went with the 1/2 deck of cards, well, because I had some cool ones on hand already that I'd bought as stocking stuffers. :)

To those who asked about the 1/2 party thing, the longer version of the story is that this winter-birthday boy wanted to have a scuba diving birthday party. Scuba lessons in Maine are hard to come by in winter (not exactly sure why, because they are in indoor pools anyway, but...) It would be doubly good since a close friend was moving next week and could be there. When mom found out how much the scuba idea was going to cost though, she said she'd take them all to the movies instead! :)

We are having a half birthday for DD who has a July birthday. She wanted a party this summer and we planned it and another girl had her party the same day, so we cancelled ours. DD is sick of that, so we decided to do it in January. She has 4 friends who all have July birthdays and we are tired of the problems with it.
No idea for gift idea though. I think that these ideas are cute though.

My triplets were born on December 26, 1996. YIKES! As you can imagine, the holidays/birthday parties got to be overwhelming for everyone.

We now do a half birthday party in June. We have the big blowout then. The grandparents, aunts, uncles & special friends give the kids their gifts then. IF the kids invite a friend or two to the half birthday party who was already at the get together in the Winter, I ALWAYS tell the parent "A gift is not necessary" and I explain why. I don't want anyone to feel we do this so the kids will get double the gifts. It's just easier for everyone.

We still celebrate their actual birthday as a family & everyone calls to wish them a happy birthday, but we have the big celebration in the summer.
