Creating wireless access in your villa

For what it's worth, I would avoid any D-Link product like the plague.

They are garbage. Ask anyone with any real networking experience and they will tell you the same.

Anything else would be fine. Linksys or Netgear make good products. I also haven't heard many bad things about Belkin gear.

The Apple products, while really nice, are a bit over priced if you are just using them for a travel router.

You can any of the above mentioned items for less than $50 on Newegg.com or a local big box store.

I'm using my d-link portable travel wireless router (right now). It works perfectly. It cost less than $50, comes with a traveling case and is the size of a pack of playing cards. I've used it on every trip and it always works great. I'm at BLT right now and just plugged it into the desk in the one bedroom and it's worked great all week.

Not sure why you would want to do this....do not all the DVC properties have free wireless access?

VGC & BLT do.

BLT does not have wireless access in rooms. There is, however, wifi in the public areas like the lobby and lounge. If you accessed wifi, it was from another guest's router or you were close enough to a public area to catch the signal, though it shouldn't have been free.

I take an old d-link wireless b that I replaced with a wireless g. It works great for the short distance of the villa. I just plug it in. Sometimes it seems I have to hard-wire a computer via cat 5 to get the internet connection setup before using the wifi. Have other people noticed that?

Glad you have had success with this particular unit, but I still can't recommend that brand to anyone. Their overall track record is very poor.

That specific device does get decent reviews, if a bit quirky.

But, hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day!

I agree. When I first bought my laptop, I hadnever usd a wirelessconnection before. I struggled for a week trying to set up a D-Link. THe laptop could see it, but woul not connet. I though surely I had a bad wireless card. I went to a local free wifi restaurant, and it connected fine, it also connected OK at the store where I purchased it. I finally returned the D-Link, bought a linksys, and it worked fine.
