My 12yo DD would love to have a dance space in her room, I want to do this cheaply.

This is the idea:

Use 2 sheets of plywood I guess 1/4 for the strength, cover the plywood with linoleum. Maybe use quarter round to finish the edges.

Does this sound like it would work? Any suggestions.

She'll be upstairs from my office, I quess I'll be hearing dancing feet :hyper:

Sounds like a plan to me:D

We just redid my room and it looks really cool. It took me 4 months and a never-ending supply of vinegar to get the wallpaper off (which I had to do on my own). We painted it yesterday and we did 3 walls light blue and one wall is dark blue and we blew glitter all over it, mom calls it "The tinkerbell wall". But the wall's not covered with glitter, it's pixie dust:rolleyes:

Are you using the plywood to elevate the dance floor? Sounds like it would be dangerous to me ankle injuries from falling off, not to mention tripping on it when walking around the room.

I was considering making one end of DS's room a "basketball court". My idea was to take up some of the carpet and put down pergo to deliniate the court. Maybe a bit pricier, but safer than elevating part of the floor.

Sounds very cool! You should do it in a corner, that way the dancefloor will be out of the way. You could even put up a miniature ballet bar on the wall! I'm now getting ideas for my oldest dd's room! Thanks!

It's not to elevate but to give it a hard surface. Your idea might be better, just cut a spot out of the carpet and put the linoleum on the subfloor.

I'm not fond of the carpet and someday hopefully can afford to do wood or pergo in the entire house so would not be a big deal to pull it up.

I'm going to use the closet door for the ballet bar, using mirror tiles to cover the door and closet bar holders to make the bar. Got the idea on trading spaces they did this on the back of a shelf or something.

Figure the bar will work as a door handle for the closet, haven't worked out how to cover the hole in the back but it won't show.

I've done some research on this subject, Janette. :)

Linoleum is a good idea. Hardwood and Marley are top choices for professional dance floors. Marley is short for marine linoleum. It is expensive but regular linoleum is a good alternative. I considered doing a laminate floor, but they are much too slipery.

Dance floors usually have a layer of foam, then plywood, then the finished floor. Dancing without the foam causes a lot of stress on the joints. If she's not going to be doing jumps, it might not be necessary.

If you have more questions, let me know. :wave2:

I'm suprised you haven't done it already Lisa, you are so good at DIY projects.

What about Luan plywood with a layer of foam under it? I don't think she'd be doing many jumps (hopefully not since the noise is bad enough already) It's more for a place to stretch and practice routines.

We never seem to have the time and the $'s at the same time. :)

It looks like your's will be upstairs, so the foam probably isn't necessary. It's more important when you put it over concrete. You probably already have a plywood subfloor. I would just take up the carpet and pad and putting the linoleum right on the subfloor.

Yes it will be upstairs, I'm trying to do this cheap. Maybe someday if I get new floors we'll do it right.

That sounds easy enough to do, maybe this is one project I can actually finish :)

We just put one down in my DD room. It was all new construction. We had purple carpet laided everywhere except the dance floor. My husband put down a white oak wood flooring (a bit high in price, but we know that there would be a lot of dancing going on..lol) we then used the quarter round trim. We hung a disco ball above with spot light. She sure loves it as do all of her friends. Good luck I hope your little dancers has as much fun as mine!!

be careful chooseing the vynal as some of htem have a heavy pattern that could come into play, upstairs i would definately not worry about foam core under luan, i would consider using something slightly thicker and raising it, the carpet pad and carpet will make a 1/2 to 3/4 iunch lip around the edge and will have to be re stretched and fastened back down.a thicker plywood will help even out the difference in hieght, luann over a pad wont hold up, the woods too thin to handle traffic. how big is the room? would it be more cost effective to have vynal in the whole room and add throw rugs for other areas? that would be my suggestion in t he case, and use a sheet vynal , the 12x12s will start to buckle at the edges if its used as a dance floor, it can and will slip and start turning loose.

I agree with Froggy. I'd just do the whole room in sheet vinyl. :)

She's been coming up for air a little bit lately. Probably has a few more slower month's before competion & convention season takes over again :)

We might actually see each other a few more times since Kate will also be competing this year. It should work out that they aren't competing with each other so we can still cheer on Chelsea in her dances :)
