Crazy question blue ray player Update

You can get really cheap ones now, like 30 bucks or so. I tend to prefer the nicer ones since the perform a little better (load faster, better online stuff - I just bought one that lists for about $130, but I got it cheaper as a refurb from Amazon). I'd get a nicer one for the main TV and a cheap one for the others.

None. I have no interest in starting to buy all my movies over again.

This started when dh and I discovered that my DVD player stopped working and then he started looking at the cool features of the blue ray player and how cheep that was

If you already have a lot of DVDs then sure, get a Bluray as it will play them too, but don't upgrade every movie in your collection. Honestly, Bluray is already dwindling and on the way out in favor of Digital HD and online streaming. There is also 4K to worry about. A $30 Bluray player isn't a huge investment, but if you are thinking about really diving in, just know that newer tech is out there as well.

I've got one. Not sure how much it really cost new (I got it via credit card points), but I think it was less than $100 back in 2011. It works, but it might be worth replacing. It doesn't handle marginal discs well (including DVD) and a lot of the features are no longer supporter like YouTube. It apparently used an older interface that YouTube eventually discontinued.

I could get a new one for $50, and I'm pretty sure it would solve a bunch of those issues.

You might try a firmware update to see if that could help the YouTube issue. Otherwise, yeah, I had a really old Bluray player that recently stopped reading BDR discs (DVDs still worked). I bought the aforementioned refurbed unit and it works so much better! Discs load very fast and it had Netflix and all that jazz too. So, I mean, if you play a lot of discs, it may be worth it.

Mine was from Sony. They literally ended support for the application interface that was on certain machines, and I don't think there was any way to do a firmware update to add support.

The current YouTube app will not work on certain device models from 2012 and older.

We will continue to focus our efforts on improving our official YouTube app for TV which is available on most 2013 and newer Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, game consoles, streaming devices, and set-top boxes (e.g. Virgin Media, BSkyB Now TV Box, TiVo).

Yeah, that happens. I like to use my equipment forever too, and sometimes the support dries up. I would have never bought the newer player if the old one hadn't malfunctioned, but now that I have it I am very happy with it.

Backwards compatibility is a funny thing. They often hardwire certain features into a machine to make it more efficient and faster, but then it's not future proof. I remember way back when, someone told me that an old PC should be able to easily pull up web pages. That was back before embedded Java and Flash complicated things.

Supposedly Flash is future proof, but try running something new on a ten year old machine.

Still, a lot of electronics these days are more powerful than PCs were 20 years ago. The processing power of my hard drive's controller blows away that of the PC I used in 1996.

There are expensive ones, middle of the road ones and super cheap ones. I have a nice one in the living room and my kids have middle of the road ones. I would start with one and put it where you are most likely to watch movies.

Ha, my famous last words. I collected Disney VHS and then they started releasing them with these new fangled DVD things. $5 more and you could get the VHS and the DVD as a package. I turned my nose up at them because I didn't think they'd catch on. I eventually replaced all of the VHS with DVD and then DVD with Blu Ray/DVD/Digital HD combo packs. I am not going 4K, I'm not...

I don't have official numbers but my understanding is DVD is still the #1 format.

We don't have a blu ray player, just DVD but it makes sense to me to put one on every tv.

I'm the main tv watcher in our family and I'm having surgery at the start of July and I'll be confined to my bed for a few weeks..the big screen tv and pvr will be leaving the front room for my bedroom for that time lol

Being the cheapskate that I am, I'm actually loving buying tons of DVD movies on Ebay right now for about $4 each (including shipping) because so many have ditched their old collections. :)

I don't know of any Blu-Ray player that doesn't play DVD. They've been so cheap since at least 2010 that I can't think of a reason not to get one. Also - many of the newer machines have "upconverting" that tries to create a higher definition image through interpolation. Some DVD players do it, but it makes more sense to do that with a Blu-Ray player that by definition has a high-def output.
