I was told at WalMart that you could only use debit or cash to purchase the Visa/MC/Amex logo gift cards. I was using a debit card anyway but the cashier said she was supposed to tell everyone that had one to buy.
Stores give away GC as promo's all the time ($20 Target w/purchase and such) and it costs the store less than $20 when you spend it on merchandise. Those GC racks have 3%-5% commissions so it "costs" the store more if you spend your GC on that. So most stores do not allow it, although it has to be policed by the cashier so YMMV. Clear as mud?
I work at Walmart and you can't use it to but an AMEX/Visa gift card. Those do have to be paid with cash or debit cards. However, you can use it to buy dining or itunes gift cards. I hope that helps.
Sorry to go off on a tangent... I just got one the other day and the pharmacist wrote "RX" on the front of it with a sharpie pen... did they do that to yours? I really don't shop at Rite Aid that much, but of course I am not going to pass up a free $25 card! What ticks me off is I had a 2nd transfer, but since it is Percocet (for disc surgery) it 'requires authorization' and counted as a new Rx and not as a transfer. Bummer!
