I hope the way I explain this makes sense. So driving home from work I drive through a tunnel (HRBT). It is two lanes. So they do construction at night and close down one side. So for a couple miles it will tell you left lane closed merge right. So say 60% merge right and the rest try to stay in the left lane and merge at the last minute. So this leaves people who merged waiting longer. So on my way home tonight I am in the right lane moving slow of course. You have people trying to pass everyone and not wait. So the four cars in front of me got tired of it and three moved into the middle of the road so no one else could pass. One car moved to the right and slowed down so no one could pass. I am telling you driving here is certainly entertaining if anything.

People don't want to wait and either muscle their way or some idiot will let them in not giving any consideration for the people who followed the sign.
How long is the work going on because my aunt is coming(lucky me) in a couple weeks, I think I will get her some transportion from the airport, because I just won't be feeling waiting at midnight, lol.

I wouldn't have the nerve to move back over to block people from passing, but I applaud anyone who does! :)

It annoys the heck out of me when people fly by, knowing they need to be getting over in line with the rest of us who moved over when we saw the sign. I always hope they have to sit up front and nobody will let them in!

I was driving in Tulsa last week on highway 75 and they had a lane closed and the same thing happened. A semi in front of me moved to the middle of the road to block off all of the impatient better-than-everyone-else people. ;)

I love it when truck does this. The people behind truck get so mad

People were honking. ..making up a third lane to go around.

Actually, you are supposed to use the full lane until the point of closure. If people did it correctly, used both lanes until the point that they can't, and zipper merged then things would actually go smoother. So those blocking lanes are actually just being jerks in my opinion.

Yup. Just like roundabouts. Most Americans just can't seem to figure out how to drive.

It annoys me even more when people decide it's OK to drive up the breakdown lane in these situations!

Good lord. People around here STINK at roundabouts but they keep putting them in. I have dealt with roundabouts in the past so I know what to do, but I swear no one else does. The worst one is by the University. Talk about a nightmare.

Were they driving a Prius? I swear Prius drivers have a whole different set of road rules.

No prius driver lol. One was a car another a smaller suv type. Two other cars mostly standard size.

They are very common in New England and are called either a traffic circle or rotary depending on what state . It is funny to watch the tourists try to figure out how to navigate thru one.

It's suppose to work that way. Here in PA we now have huge signs that state "use both lanes to merge point." Well, if when everyone saw that the lane was closed miles before and moved over at that point, everyone would just drive right through. Now it is complete stop and go traffic for miles because of the folks up ahead at the merge point.

It's nice to see the trucks move over and block the lane on the interstates. About 5 minutes later after the final folks at the merge point moves over, the single lane picks back up and you cruise right through the construction area. It is proven to me every single time I'm on the interstate with all the bridge work going on here in PA that you need to move over to the open lane as soon as you know it is going to be closed. Else you will be moving at 3 mph for miles.

I have a friend who has a Prius. She spends lots of time figuring out how to not use any gas. Highways and freeways are not possible because she can't go fast enough. Needless to say, no one ever wants her to drive anywhere!

I know that's the way it's SUPPOSED to work, but I'm not sure I buy it.

Let's say you have two lanes going down to one (left lane closed) and 100 cars going through.

Zipper method...
Even number cars in left lane and odd number in right lane. The theory is the order after the merge should be car #1, 2, 3, 4..., right? But car #3 (and ALL the odd cars) has to stop to let car 2 in. Car 5 (and all the odd cars) has to stop to let car 4 in. By the same token, car 2 has to stop until car 1 clears, and car 4 has to stop until car 3 clears. So you have stop & go in both lanes

Merge early...
Picture the same lineup. But car 2, seeing the merge ahead, gets behind car 9. Cars 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 keep moving. Car 11 has to stop to allow car 2 in. Car 3 goes behind 15. So car 11, 2, 13, and 15 keep moving with minimum stoppage. Granted, car 2 is 5 cars behind where it would be in the zipper method, but continues moving the whole time.

I don't know for a fact 'merge early' works quicker, but I still believe in it.

I agree. I think most people here do too. And that is why they get annoyed when the cards in the left lane go but the ones in the right lane are stuck. Maybe if people here knew the one to one method (one side of each goes) the it would be easier.
