Craigslist negotiating

Hi, I have never used craigslist before. There is a big furniture item that I want that is listed for $1700. I offered $1500. Is this rude? I just assumed that you haggle on craigslist. I haven't heard back from the seller, so I was wondering if what I did was wrong.

No, it isn't rude. It is up to the owner to decide what they will accept, but I would offer what I was willing to pay.

I haggle all the time. Sometimes it takes a few days to get back to you. They might be busy or away for the holiday weekend...

email the person again saying you are still interested and give them your cell no# I always find it much easier to talk to people on craiglist then they can tell you are sincere. Or you can decide it's not for you! people get so many email inquirys it is hard to for them to deal with them all.

I haggle all the time on Craigslist. I typically have better results haggling once on site looking at the item. Cash in hand works a lot better in my opinion. To many people make offers through email and then never show up.

I sell a ton on Craigslist. I put the price I want and if someone offers less, I delete the email. I will always get multiple people willing to pay full price so there is no reason to mess with the offers.

I to sell a fair amount of CL and I will never haggle via email. If you show up and wanna haggle I am all for it!

You probably price your items appropriately. Some people over price their items and hence if you wait sometimes you will see the price eventually go down when they get no offers.

I'll haggle over email much more often then in person. If you make me an offer and are coming to pick it up don't offer me less once you get here. On some items I'll get several offers so won't bother with someone wanting it for less, on others if you are the only offer I'll either accept or counter. I probably won't answer right away if you offered less though.

but maybe not the same...I find that I get no responses when I try to email a seller directly through the Craigslist link- like it doesn't go through (I've tried this several times). When I copy and paste address into my yahoo email account, I'll get responses. Not sure if it's on my end or Craig's...

I heard back from her and she was really sweet. The only problem is she said that someone is coming on Tuesday to look at item who is very interested. I cannot pick up until Wednesday. She is an hour and a half away from me. I said I will pay full price if the other person does not.

Anyway, here is hoping...

I always look for emails where people provide information, like "I'm interested in your item, here's my cell phone number and email. These are the times that are convenient to meet you, and name".

I just delete the emails that say "I'll give you 20 bucks for your $35 item", no name, no email, no cell... nothing.

Good Luck with getting it. I once sent an email to some one with my cell to text back at the previous night. We arranged a meet up time at 3pm because he had classes till then. 2 minutes before 3, I get a text saying "sold item". That was frustrating.

Not rude at all. Whats rude is when someone agrees to a price and then comes in and gives you a $5.00 bill for things you agreed on getting $40 for. Like the one lady who bought my 10 3 month old nice curtain rods that cost at a minimum $30 (small one) ......

I always haggle on Craigslist. I actually think $1500 was too high.

I haggle on Craigslist all the time. (Sometimes I don't haggle but I let them know the asking price is out of my range and want to see if it can be in my range before I waste either of our time).

That said, I have found buying and selling on craigslist can be....difficult. I did get a gorgeous couch from craigslist and have sold many items. But I can't tell you how many people have emailed me with interest in an item and even agreed to buy it but then never showed up. I have also been interested in items being sold on craigslist and emailed people and never heard back.

So Craigslist can be tough sometimes.

I've sold a lot on online sites (craigslist or bookoo), and I don't mind online haggling. If I've accidentally overpriced, better to get a lower offer than no offer at all!

I don't care for haggling in person.

YOu don't have to sell the $40. item for $5. after the person made his trip over to buy it.

Haggling is part of the deal. If they don't want to take less, they can tell you that. I've never been offended by someone's offer, but they can't get offended if I say no. Craigslist is really tricky because so many people say they'll take it and never show up. Then, you have legitimate buyers that you have to so no to while you wait to see if the original person shows or not. If you seriously want the furniture, go get it before Tuesday.
