Crafty people, help!

My son's teacher is getting married Oct. 30th. I thought it would be really kewl to make something the kids decorate and sign. This is first grade.
I thought it might be nice to buy green ware and then have them paint it and fire it but that might be too expensive to do.
Then I caught the tail end of one of those wedding shows where the friends do all the planning and they bought a nice platter
and had all the guest sign it.

I thought this would be perfect. Any ideas how to do it? Just buy paint markers? I also thought about trying to find a nice wooden platter and have the kids decorate the edges and then buys some pretty candles for the center.

OK Give me your thoughts! PLEASE!

How about a combination of the two ideas? A greenware platter that the kids sign?

We have a number of paint your own ceramics shops in our area. I know that any of those owners would be receptive to the idea of you selecting a platter and having the kids come in. Although it has been a while since I did this (DH is much more receptive to me spending money on scrapping so I've been devoting time there ) I seem to remember sort of a paint pen that could be used.

Maybe call the parents after setting up a time for them to stop by with the kids. Of course you'd want to check on how long the shop needs to do the firing, etc. so it could be done before she leaves for the wedding/honeymoon.

When I got married as a teacher my aide had the children right a book. She asked each child what is a wedding? Then wrote their answers on a sheet of paper (they were 4/5) and had them draw a picture of me and DH and then bond it together. It was wonderful and I cherish it so maybe you can do that too as the card.

But I like the platter ideas best. That is something she can always use. Maybe if you paint it then fire it you can use paint markers for the children to sign it. I have also seen people paint faces of each child around a plater and then add names.

I found a pottery place today! I think I had the man crazy by the time I left because I had to get it all straight on how to do it!
I have 2 options.
1.
I can buy from him paint pens and buy a pre decorated platter and have the kids sign it and then bake it in my own oven. Easy to do and actually the cheapest way
or
2. Buy green ware from him and then stencil and sponge a platter/serving tray and then using black paint finger print the rim of the dish. Then using this paint in this tube write the kids names next to their finger prints.

The first option is cheaper, quicker and easier! But the second is soooooo cute! I thought if he is still using a sun to stencil on the kids tee shirts I could do that myself and then write their names and wedding date and who it is from.....But the plater I picked is $45 and then the paints and glaze we are talking about $60!

Of course I will have to talk to other parents in the class and see what they want to do

Here's a new thought:

You could go to a discount store and buy a plain white platter (they must have these.) Or maybe a plain tray?

Go to a crafts store and buy paint pens made for pottery. I think there are those that become permanent when they are baked. In any event, make sure they can come in contact with food.

I'm sure this can be done for less than $60. Check Michael's! I seem to remember them having white glazed ceramics, and I'm sure they have the pens.
