So...

This is a tooth on my dentist's watch list that just went from minor notice of a minor crack to very obviously cracked when looking in the mirror.

So my questions at 7 on a Thursday night...

If and when it breaks...is this going to hurt like crazy?
Since I will be a new patient at whatever Dentist I find---how emergent is this issue?

I know I can go to urgent care for a medical problem or even an ER for a very serious problem...

But what do they do for teeth?

And how do they fix cracks? (as in...am I going to be getting a crown?)

My dentist made it seem very minor when I saw him in July.

My main fear is pain...I don't cope well with major pain and toothaches can get miserable.

At this point though...based on appearance and some minor sensitivity---I'm
thinking it isn't so minor anymore and I would hope that a new dentist could see me quickly.

Call in the morning and see if they can maybe work you in that day.

As for pain, it depends on if the nerve will be exposed. Hopefully, you won't need a root canal. The dentist will file down the tooth, take an x-ray to look for further damage, make a mold of the teeth, make you a temporary cap that you will wear for a couple weeks until the permanent cap is made.

After insurance it will cost you around $250-$350 depending on how good your dental insurance is.

Yep - it all depends on if a further crack will expose the nerve.. I would try to call tomorrow..

OT: I made some suggestions on my thread (in regards to keeping my books) in response to your question regarding Amish books for your DD.. It's there when you feel up to looking at it..:goodvibes

Hope you remain pain-free until the dentist can see you..:)

Totally forgot--will go check it out now. We have had a busy homeschooling/activity week.

Bit at least my back pain from spasms last week subsided. Just in time to loom forward to a toothache.

will go check now!

We used to live in the area you are in now and I was trying to remember the name of my wonderful dentist but am seemingly not finding her. However, I did run across this group, maybe it would work for you, they sound good. http://www.drtarpley.com/staff.html Know how hard it is to be somewhere new and have a dental emergency. Good luck.

If it starts to hurt, get some denture adhesive. Use it to pack the cracked area. It will keep the air out until you can see the dentist. I had a tooth that cracked. This is what the dentist had me do until I could get in to get it fixed. It worked.

Thanks for sharing that tid bit.. Adult DD had a cracked tooth back in May - while in Maine - and was in a world of pain.. Wish I knew this then.. Good info to have if it should ever happen again..:thumbsup2

they also make cracked tooth "repair kits"!:)

I have found them at Target and Wegmans.

I always travel with one.
