But...

It's not as bad as I thought.

I purchased one of the certified pre-owed Nooks from Buy.com around Christmas. It's not the screen that's cracked but rather, it's the frame on the right side where the "page turner" is. I was a little nervous to call customer service but they were SUPER nice. The girl assured me that it is still under warranty and they will be sending a replacement in 3-5 days!

I just need to send my cracked one back within 14 days and all is well with my Nook world!

Thanks to whoever posted this deal back at Christmas because I can't live without my Nook (it actually still works just fine) and I'm so glad that getting a replacement is no trouble at all!

Thats exactly what happened to mine, too. I also bought a certified pre-owned nook. After reading about 3 books, the exact same place by the page turner cracked. I got a run around at first because it was out of warranty based on the first owners activation date. Luckily I came up with the dated receipt for it, from 2 months prior. (pfew!) They mailed a new pre-owned one out right away, then I mailed back the cracked nook to them.
I was happy with the customer service after we got around their initial "its out of warranty" mind set........

I had this happen to me with my first Nook and with the Nook they sent to replace it. Mine were bought new so no run around about the warranty. And the service definitely was excellent. They sent the new nook, I sent the old ones back - and being the frugal person I am I sent it back in the packaging they sent the replacement in.

I've not had it happen with the third nook (which I've now had since October) but I've also figured out how to do the "swipe" to turn pages and I think this may be what is preventing the crack. :goodvibes

I think the swipe is running your finger across the screen in a particular place.

Seems to be a common problem with the Original Nooks.

I even knew someone who tried to return hers because of this and the CS rep tried to refuse the return because "it wouldn't have happened if she had done the screen swipe instead of using the buttons" :headache:. Needless to say B&N's CS leaves a bit to be desired sometimes.

The new Nook doesn't have buttons so hopefully the cases won't crack as much now.

My "new" one (new to me) arrived yesterday. I don't see any difference with the plastic frame. I hope it's not noticeable and is just sturdier!

I also bought the Woot Kindle the other day. It's due to arrive tomorrow. I'll be really interested in comparing the two devices. I'm thinking I really want to take the Kindle on my business trip to Singapore in a few weeks as it sounds like I can use my email on it's 3G connection.

I know what I'll be doing this weekend!
