CR DVC resort a no-go

DVC had all intentions of a DVC at the Contemporary, I know that for fact. The plans changed. They went to AKL instead. Will there ever be a DVC at the Contemporary, possibly. Will it be soon, no.

It was in the plans but the plans changed. As Caskbill stated the AKL has not met Disney expectations for room occupany. At one time neither was the Contemporary. But since the room rehab and now the lobby, restaurant and shops rehab the Contemporary is thriving again. That makes it a more desirable location for Disney Resort operations and more expensive for DVC to get in. AKL was a win/win for DVC and Disney. At this time that is not the situation at the Contemporary. DVC is interested in going in and spending the least amount of money to do so.

Sorry, I have not been on the boards in a while. Are they going to add to the existing AKL, or are they going to just create AKV within the hotel?

Yes and yes! They are doing both, converting the 5th and 6th floor deluxe rooms to DVC accomadations and adding a new building on the sunset savannah side of AKL.

Both. Phase 1 will be rooms converted to villas within the existing building. Phase 2 will be a second DVC building.

Thanks for posting this news. It is a bummer, though I am not surprised. Although I did not like the "C" shaped high-rise that we all saw, I would like to see DVC at the CR. Maybe someday.

I continue to believe that we will hear about a DL DVC soon....

Pardon my ignorance, but what is STOL?

I believe it stands for "Short Take-Off and Landing." It's the aviation term for the landing strip that runs along the main road leading into the TTC / Magic Kingdom area. If you look off to your right as you are approaching the ticket booths near the TTC, you should see the runway sitting just behind the Epcot monorail track.

Over the last 6 months there have been varying rumors that the STOLport site would be used as either:

1. A construction staging area for new DVC units at the Contemporary. Given the limited land available immediately surrounding the CR, the STOLport would be home to construction equipment, trailers, materials delivered in bulk and even parking for the construction workers.

2. The other rumor was that this site would actually be HOME to a new DVC resort. If true, chances are it would be the first resort situated along the EPCOT monorail, with a load/unload station tacked-onto the current monorail structure. Reportedly Disney has developed just about all of the land that it can around the Seven Seas Lagoon, and placing a resort in this location would give them another "monorail resort" without having to expand the monorail track itself.

Did he say what's up with all the activity at the STOL?
No he didn't, and I forgot to ask.

As tjkraz said, it's short take off and landing. Basically that's an airport runway, paved or not, that is not as long as a normal runway and can only accommodate aircraft that don't need longer runways to land, or take off.

Basically that would include all single engine propeller aircraft, and some light twins. It would not accommodate heavier twind or any type of jet aircraft.

Thanks for the information, but I really hate to hear that. I have been hoping for a DVC at the CR and had already convinced DH to add on for those points. Oh well.

I agree.
This is sad news.
I am heartbroken. :sad1:

I have been waiting 15 years for a DVC with monorail access.
I use an EVC because of mobility issues.

I know before the CR renovation (not sure if things have changed since the refurbishment) they only had one HA room with a rollin shower in the tower. That was located on the Atrium club level (12 floor) and it was frequently booked a year in advance.( I will not book it myself as I want to give others
the chance to enjoy that view.)

I loved the MK view from the tower. We stayed there in 1990 before I became disabled.

I was really hoping that a DVC would be built at the CR. If that had happened than the new DVC would have needed to follow ADA guidelines ( the tower is grandfathered and so they did not need to add more HA rooms) and more HA rooms would have been built.
The CR is my favorite deluxe resort and I was ready to buy DVC points.

I guess I will just keep waiting.

No DVC for me.

DVC always seem to have more HA rooms. OKW has a bunch of them. I think also the other resorts.

they realized that we (current DVC members) will get old and need them.

but most of OKW are on the first floor.

Thanks for the info.

Since most of the DVC's were built after the ADA went into effect those hotels/villas/rooms must follow the ADA reuirements.

The "older" Disney resorts that were built before ADA have to meet less of the requirements.

Hotel rooms with roll in showers are few and far between. I cannot lift my leg high enough to get it over the edge of tub unless dh helps me lift it.

I like to be independant and therefore request a room with a roll in shower.

Hotels are required to have 1 HA room for every 25.(These rooms can have tubs with benchs and grab rails)
If a hotel has more than 50 rooms then they need to have 1 room with a roll in shower for up to 100 rooms. Then for every 100 rooms after that they need 1 more room with a roll in shower. Thus each of the All Stars (with 1900 rooms ) would need 19 rooms with a roll in shower.

The Wilderness Lodge which has 738 rooms would only need to have 7 rooms with a roll in shower.

Because the values and mods are larger and newer they have more HA rooms.
That is why a lot of guests with disabilities stay at the values and mods .
A lot of the HA rooms at deluxes are booked quite a bit in advance.

Just a little info.
Thanks for letting me share.

Thanx for the interesting info, Caskbill.
I for one wouldn't purchase, or probably even stay, at the CRV.

On the other hand, I have my checkbook ready for AKV! :santa:

This news dovetails perfectly into the Disneyland DVC rumors. Those that I talk with that have "alledged inside info", have been saying all along that DLR was next. I tend to believe what they tell me, as they informed me of the California cruise almost a year before it actually happened.

DVC's OKW seems to have more than the ADA requires. the marjority of the rooms on the first floor are HC and yes have the roll in showers.

now they do have some that don't. Mother hates the HC rooms and she is the reason I need a first floor.

the showers with the curtain, most of the time the water is all over the floor and she almost falls getting out.

how do you stop that from happening?

The best way I have found is to aim the sprayer head toward the back wall.

Hope that helps!

It would - but dealing with mother. she does what she wants and the heck with it. Until she almost falls then someone else is at fault..... :rotfl:

thanks!!!

Very disappointing!!

We were in WDW Dec. 1-10...we had a CM inform an entire group of people that an announcement had been made to staff that DVC was indeed coming to the Contemporary. These ups & downs really stink!
