We checked in last week at the Contemporary... I had sent a request for North wing, close to main building due to a bad back and of course slipped in the possibility for a comp upgrade to tower if available, it was our first stay at CR & it was a surprise to my dd who was turning 4 the day we checked in. Let me first say that I totally know they are requests and only requests... we paid for a wing and expected to get a wing and LOVED our wing room.

So we check in and the cm says our room hasn't be cleaned yet but it stated "do not move" on the resservation. So dh and I look at each other like cool, our fax must have been received and maybe just maybe it was a unexpected room. So THEN she gives us our keys, imagine our surprise when they pop out gold cards... she said hmm that's odd, they call these the vip cards and almost are never used but let us keep them anyway. Dh and I look at each other again... hmmmmmmmmmmm! So then she says here is where your room will be, it will be one of these (circled about 5 rooms) and it was in the North wing, 2nd floor almost all the way at the end. <insert burst bubble here> HEE HEE! I did not let it bother me at all, our room, although a slight walk, was awesome.. it was SOOOOO big!!! And it was the Contemporary!!!

It was so neat having the gold cards though, lots of extra attention from CM's when paying for stuff. HEE HEE! Actually my usually oblivious dh is the one who noticed that when they saw our gold cards, we seemed to have gotten a little extra attention.. has anyone else ever gotten the "gold cards"??? I just found it so weird!

2 thumbs up for CR! Great location, loved the monorail but actually walked TO MK the mornings we started out there, much faster and easier.

Are they gold maybe for the 50th Anniversary? Sounds like a great trip. We stayed in N.Wing facing the castle and LOVED it! You can't beat the walk to MK!

We had gold cards in January of 2004 when we stayed at the GF. It was a great 4 night stay there. We had been given an attic room that was at the end of ? building and we had a perfect view of MK and the Castle. We watched the fireworks, watched the castle change colors, and could even hear the wolf howling at the Haunted Mansion in the morning before it got noisy. A few CM's would look at the card and then look at us when we used it for purchases charged to our room. The I got up the nerve to ask a couple of times what the gold card meant. One CM said that they are reserved for VIP's and another said that they are for concierge level. Who knows? I just know that I enjoyed using them (maybe that's why they give them out - so you can spend alot because you like to use them for purchases!.

Yes, we got the gold cards when we stayed Concierge (14th floor). I though they were only used for Concierge.

It was "nice" to see the CM's "snap" to attention when we used them. ;)

My father (who owned a travel agency at the time) took the 14 of us in the family on a trip in June 2002 - we stayed in All-Star Movies - and we had the Gold Cards...

We got the Gold Cards over Spring Break at WL Concierge. They were cool!! Lots of CM's did notice them. We felt very special for no reason whatsoever! Just all part of that Disney Magic!

We always stay concierge and NEVER even saw a "Gold Card"....

What's up with that???? We have stayed over 25 times and spend mega $$$ at that place. :confused3 (didn't even know anything about the existance of "codes" until last August!)

I just don't get it. We never seem to be the ones to get that fabulous upgrade or terrific surprise when we go. It never even occurred to me that these things were even happening until I started to find this out on the DIS. Now I am feeling a bit peevish. ;)

Oh well. Good for you guys. Glad you had a nice time. We have stayed at the CR too many times to count and it remains my kids' fave.

OP - it sounds like you had a wonderful time :)

Perhaps these "Gold cards" mean you have an unlimited spending capability on your room key
Or ....

Maybe there is a set limit... of say... $50K ?
Boy, I'd hate to see the over the limit fee applied to my visa when that bill comes due :earboy2: not that I can't control my spending at Disney when faced with all those wonderful gift shops

Hee hee, glad to know we were not the only ones that have experianced the "gold cards" and noticed the tiny more attention in CM's when using them... still think it was weird since we were wing room.

We had gold cards at BWI concierge. I didn't notice any "special" treatment. I wonder if the gold cards would have let the OP go to the 14th floor?

We stayed AKL CL recently after having stayed at Poly standard GV earlier in the week. Our Poly room keys were the regular purple ones with Tinkerbell on them and our AKL CL room keys looked identical but the purple was replace with gold. Is that what OP means by "gold" cards?

Being our first trip to WDW, I naively asked the concierge CM when we checked-in at AKL whether WDW used different colours for different resorts. He told me that the gold ones were to identify concierge guests.

I wonder if, in the OP's case, the CR ran out of regular room keys?

We always have gold cards when we stay concierge. I never noticed any extra attention from the CM's, I never heard them refered to as "VIP cards" either. Oh well, glad you enjoyed your trip! :flower:

Just telling you what they said at Victoria Lounge at the AKL when we sat down to have a drink before dining at Jiko. I guess CM's will say things to make guests feel important - part of that Disney magic!

We had the gold Tink keys at Poly concierge last Jan, some cast members looked perplexed but the concierge staff knew what they were.

BTW, your daughters are beautiful! :flower:

I've never seen the gold cards either...unless those are the gold tone cards (straw color?) that we get from time to time. We have gotten them in concierge and in regular rooms without explanation--we have also gotten regular tone cards in concierge. I never knew they meant anything. We did receive some comp tickets last year and they were not gold.

LadyHawke10 - Thanks for the sweet words about my pic. Also, the last time we stayed at the GF, we received those brownish/straw colored cards. I wander if that is what they are talking about by "gold" or if the cards are actually "gold" like a gold visa or mc??? Interesting......Nobody including us gave them a second look!! :earsgirl: I thought they were that color because we have APs and didn't put the park ticks on the room key!!
