I am a swim instructor at the YMCA; being a new employee I was required to get certified in CPR/AED/First Aid. I took the training course 2 weeks ago. In the class the instructor told us "Someone in this room will use these skills in an emergency situation in the next year."
I never dreamed it would be me!
On Halloween day after lunch my DS4 asked if he could have a piece of candy from his class party. I agreed and unwrapped a piece of Starburst for him. He has had tootsie rolls in the past and I didn't think this would be too different. I told him make sure you chew it all the way.
As I was cleaning up the dining room table from lunch he came running over to me with a panicked look on his face. I immediately realized he was choking. I can't believe how fast that training kicked in. I assessed that he was still able to breathe but was in distress. I asked if he was choking (he nodded). I told him to spit it out, but he couldn't. I asked if he needed me to help him (he nodded). I told him I was going to turn him around and hit his back. I turned him with his back to me, leaned him forward a bit and gave him 5 back blows. I turned him to face me and told him to spit it out. Out came the whole piece of starburst.
While this was not the biggest emergency we could have had I can't tell you how thankful I am to have received that training!
It is so important that EVERYONE know howto perform CPR/lifesaving skills. You seriously never know when you will need it. You can check with your local park district or hospital about where to get training. If you receive a CPR certification it is usually good for 2 years then you need a refresher course.
I highly recommend that anyone who has ever had training to take it again. It's not something we think about/use on a daily basis and would be so helpful to go through the training again.
I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully encourage everyone to take a CPR class.
