We will be traveling with 2 sets of grandparents and our 3 children (19 months, 3 years, and 6 years). Has anyone had a successful snorkeling trip with kids around a similar age? Our kids are not strong swimmers and we were thinking of trying to find a private snorkel tour that could take us to Playa El Cielo, since it sounds like that has pretty shallow waters. We were thinking with a private snorkel tour the grandparents could take turns with the 19 month on the boat while the rest snorkeled. Any recommendations for a tour operator would be much appreciated!
I don't know if I can help you with your specific needs with young children, but we used Chichi's charters in cozumel for a private snorkle tour for 6 people a few years ago. Was basically the same price as a port adventure, but we had a fantastic snorkel guide, Angel, who helped our young daughter (7 yrs old) who wasn't a big snorkeling fan at the time. It was a short cab ride from the Disney pier to the marina where our tour departed from.
But we tried something simple and flexible on our cruise two weeks ago. We took a cab ($20 each way for 4) from the pier to the Money Bar. The Money Bar backs up to a reef, so we brought our own snorkel gear, although I think they might also rent sets, and stepped right into the water. There are lots of fish near the entrance steps and the reef is about 30 yards out. The snorkeling is good and several cruise snorkel tour catamarans pulled up to the same reef.
Entrance to the Money Bar is free, but we ordered a few drinks and a plate of delicious nachos and had fantastic service. So, for roughly $90 with nourishment, tips, and 2 cab rides, four of us had a great snorkel morning. The Money Bar is primarily a waterfront restaurant, but they do have a small section of sand and lounge chairs with umbrellas for any who would rather sunbathe than snorkel. There isn't a traditional beach and water access is from a short staircase on the seawall. The flexibility of our morning was great, as one of our group wasn't feeling well, and stayed on the ship, no lost port adventure fees. And we did see another family there just playing around in the water with their toddler and a float.
Just a couple ideas for you...definitely research them for yourself and see if one might be a good fit!
