Cozumel Playa Mia Beach break question

We are thinking about doing Playa Mia on our cruise in October. Has anyone done this on their own instead of booking thru Disney? Do you get there earlier if you do it on your own? We will have 4 adults and 2 children (6yo and 8yo) with us, so how about cab fare? Right now there is no availability to do it thru Disney so I'm trying to figure out if we should try to attempt this on our own!

The other option would be to go to Paradise Beach.

I went two years ago through a DCL excursion. Our son was two so the full 6-8 hours was way too long so we ended up taking a taxi back to port - it was $17 USD. If I were to do it again, I wouldn't go through DCL as it was a longish walk to the buses. Then a longish wait to depart. I cant remember what the DCL excursion cost was but if i had to do it again, i would just do it on my own since i can get tickets online and can get a cab right at the port.

Has anyone tried to snorkel at Playa Mia? We have our own snorkeling gear and would love to find a place in Cozumel to be able to use it.

Took my 4 year old grandson and couldn't get him out of the splash area. Nanni and Papow were really tired. The cab and buying tickets on line are always an option. The price for the cabs is listed where you catch them, I think.
