I've noticed that all the excursions we are interested in Cozumel involve some kind of eating, not to mention we love Mexican food in general so I'd hate to miss out on the opportunity to partake. However, seeing as how that is the first stop, I'd really hate to be sick for the rest of the trip. What's the general consensus these days? Is it safe to eat there? Margaritas on ice ok? Salsa with produce washed in their water ok? Or should this be avoided?

We have gone to Cozumel a handful of times, every time eating/drinking at either Paradise Beach or Margaritaville., with no issues. That doesn't mean everything is 100% perfectly safe (is anything?) but our experience has been just fine.

Restaurants and other tourist catering businesses are going to use bottled water for everything, including rinsing produce, preparing food and drinks, and making ice. My friend's parents live in Cozumel during the winter, and they say that no one who lives there ever uses the tap water for anything except watering the garden or flushing the toilet. That’s probably an exaggeration, but you should be just fine doing regular touristy things in Cozumel.

My husband and I ate nearly the same meal except he had salad and I did not. Stick with what is cooked when offered food. No raw veggies and don’t trust tap water, drink bottled or cans regardless if you like the flavor. If you want coke and they have a pitcher of water and pear sodas left, sign me up for a can of pear!
Bring medicine with you, but the medicine Mexico had was amazing. They fixed my problem right away. But you won’t find out until you are on the ship so better to bring something when the tummy rumbles.

We've been on a few excursions in Mexico where a bagged lunch was provided and it was always pre-packaged items, not prepared so as to ensure that there is no contamination. Not gourmet, and not really "Mexican" food, but at least it's safe. For me it was good because I could also read the ingredients because I have some uncommon allergies.

Been to Nachi Cocom many times where food and beverage is included. Never had a problem. We also have eaten in La Choza a few times and it was delicious (and no issues)!
