Cozumel--is Mr. Sanchos a good choice?

We have a family of 5--me and DH, 3 kids ages 6,9,12. We haven't booked anything in Cozumel. I like the idea of the beach break, but would it be cheaper to just get a taxi to Mr. Sanchos on our own? Is this a good choice for kids our ages? How much is the taxi ride and how much can we expect to spend there? I don't see anything on their website about prices.

We did Mr Sanchos in June 03 and January 04. The first time we had rented a jeep and the second time we took a cab there and back. The ride there was very squished as we're also a family of 5, it was about a 15 minute drive if I remember correctly. I want to say it was around $18 plus tip.
Mr Sanchos was great. It was $6 for the wristbands for the kids to go on the water trampoline for the day. Other than that, it's what you spend on food, drinks, and alcohol. You can also ride horses and rent ATV's, but we never did any of that. It's a great way to spend the day.
We really did enjoy having the jeep and seeing the island prior to going to Mr Sanchos. Price our renting a jeep, which can seat all 5 of you and see how much more it is than a taxi.

you could always checkout cozumel-beach.com as paradise beach is a really great free beach with iceberg, trampoline etc and restaurant and shower facilities i believe the taxi is around $12 from the pier.

That beach looks good too! What the heck am I going to do? How deep is the water by the iceberg and trampoline? Do they cost extra? I don't think DS (6) could do that but both DDs are good swimmers. Is the food good? The food on the Mr. Sanchos site looks good, but I'm thinking how family friendly can it be if one of the featured things on the website is their extensive list of tequilas!

Don't forget the shopping!

Mr. Sancho's has great little shops for traditional Mexican souvenirs.

They bargain, and my wife hates too. And she doesn't speak Spanish. She and DD went looking while I was sunning (sleeping) on the beach. They were checking out what they liked with thoughts they would bring me back to negotiate.

Of course, they were doing the best thing in negotiating you can do, walk out without buying.

She said the people were dropping prices in 1/2 a she left.

She came and got me (woke me up) and we went back. They remembered her and honored all their prices.

One American woman came up an picked up an item marked $40. She asked the owner $40. The woman said yes, but glanced at us. We kept silent.

The american paid her $40 and left. I pulled out my $20 as we had previously agreed for the same exact item.

We both said gracias!

Mr. Sancho's is excellent. The food and service are fantastic, the beach area is beautiful.

Very family friendly. You can eat on the beach or under the roofed restaurant area. There is a separate bar type area with swings for seats. They have a very large hot tub. A very nice/clean changing and restroom area.

The little shops are great..very nice people working there.

We were not squished in a cab..our's was a van..and there was only one other couple in there with us. We had plenty of room..for another 4 people at least, if not more. Also, taxi's wait outside of Mr. Sancho's, so when you are ready to go, you do not have to wait..you can go. We caught our taxi..right up from the pier..there was a guy..kind of in the grassy area..middle of the road with a sign that had all the prices on it. We agreed on a place/price..he motioned..cab pulled up. No problem.

We can definately recommend Mr. Sancho's.

I was at Paradise Beach in April and it was WONDERFUL! No entrance fees to begin with, and that saved me $84 in shore excursions for 3 adults with RCI. The food was delicious, inexpensive and generous! I paid $32 for a huge hamburger (real Angus beef!) and fries, spicy chicken wrap and fries, nachos and salsa, and 3 Cokes! The chairs were comfortable and plentiful, and there were umbrellas and small tables as well.

The water didn't seem too deep out by the iceberg or trampoline; I saw several small children around 6 years of age in that area, but you might want to check with someone else about that.

I've seen a lot of posts on the Ports of Call board on www.cruisecritic.com where people have said that Paradise Beach was the highlight of their trip! It certainly was a highlight for us. If you go to the Ports of Call board, you can ask there about the water depth. The fellow who runs the place frequents that board (his name is Paradise Beach Tom) and will answer any questions you have. He's a great fellow and sooooo friendly.

To be fair, I haven't been to Mr. Sancho's but I do know that Paradise Beach is indeed a paradise!

We did Paradise beach in January. It is wonderful. The food is great and inexpensive. It is free to use the chairs, umbrella's, water trampoline, water iceburg, great clean bathrooms. Why pay when you can go for free?
