Tulum Ruins and Beach Tour:

Booking through Disney it says that the excursion starts at 9:40 but the ship doesn't dock until 10. Anyone know anything about this? Is this excursion worth doing?

LG,

We had the same question last year when we did the Western. My mother did Tulum and really enjoyed it.

The answer is that the start time is the time you have to meet/gather on the ship for the excursion. This tour is the first to leave the ship so they get everyone together and ready to disembark as soon as the ship clears immigration.

Hope that helps.

Ok. New question.

Which is better:

Tulum Ruins or San Gervasio Ruins?

In terms of ruins, Tulum is a larger set of ruins and is the only major Mayan ruin that is located on the water. It is quite spectacular to see.

If you are looking at just doing the ruins than Tulum is better (or so I've been told - I've never seen them).

If you are looking to also do some shopping and see more of Cozumel as well than you might light San Gervasio. That's the tour we did and it gave us time to shop in the morning, have lunch on the ship, do the ruins and Playa Sol in the afternoon.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one - it is up to you.

With the late seating, we had plenty of time to shop after getting back from Tulum and we did so (especially since the boat drops you at the town dock on the way back in).

I can't speak for San Gervasio, but I know my mother really liked the beach at Tulum. After the ruins they let you walk down to the beach there and there's even some beach time built into the itinerry.

We read up on it before hand, so she knew to wear her bathing suit under her clothes and to bring a towel. If you decide to go, bring some toilet paper, as the locals "charge" $0.25 per square.

It is a full day and long bus ride, but she raved about it and loved the beach part.

I hope that helps!

DoctorP: You said your DD was able to do the teen excursion after spending the day doing the Tulum ruins with you. We're planning on the same things for us and DSs. When did your DD eat dinner? We have the late dining, too. Was the teen excursion back in time for your DD to join you for dinner or did she eat elsewhere that night? Also, I had read that you are served Subway sandwiches on the ride back from Tulum. Do they give you a choice of sandwiches? Thanks again for answering my questions about this! :)

Here's the scoop on your questions:

DD came to the dining room at just about 9:00 pm and could have eaten with us with little problem. She chose to go back to the room and order room service (she gets a kick out of room service, I think). We got back to the room and found out that not only had she ordered room service, but she ordered herself THREE DINNERS since she was undecided about what she wanted and knew there was no extra cost. She also got a plate of chocolate chip cookies for dessert. She didn't waste much food, so it was just a really humorous thing.

Yes, the lunch on the excursion is from the Subway that is located right at the ruins. The choices were turkey or vegetarian. Because of the raw vegetables, I opted to not eat my sandwich (though DCL assured me it would be safe) but I drank soda (beer was also offered), ate the corn snack, muffins, and dessert that came with the lunch. BTW, lunch was not served until we got back on the bus at about 3:00 pm so be prepared with snacks and drinks to tide you over--they are also available at the ruins.

We did the Tulum Ruins last August and loved it. The guide is very knowledgable and the site is quite fascinating. The beach is one of the most beautiful I've seen and almost empty. Our kids had time for the Teen cruise - don't remember what they did for dinner but no one gets hungry on a Disney Cruise! We age the Subway sandwiches with no problem.

One caution - this excursion is not for kids who can't sit on a bus for a long time, walk around with a group in the hot sun for a long time and behave. I would say minimum age 10 or 11 - know your kid. We had a few who were miserable and disrupted the day for the rest of us. You can't really blame the kids but it was frustrating.

Thanks, DoctorP and teensmom! I bet my DSs would love to go back to the cabin and order room service, whatever they wanted! LOL

I think we'll definitely need to take drinks and snacks with us on this excursion. DH is diabetic and needs to eat at certain intervals, not to mention the fact that we'll probably ALL be hungry much earlier than 3pm.

teensmom: By the time we cruise next summer, DSs will be 16 and 13, so I don't have any worries about them being able to sit on the bus and then walk around ruins, for periods of time.
