My 3 YO DS came down with a case of Coxsackie virus last week- had the classic signs of fever, lethargy and spots in his mouth and throat.

I am almost certain he got it from the swimming club we belong to since a friend of mine went through the same thing with her son after a trip to the pools at Sesame Place. He has a bad habit of letting lots of water get in his mouth. I don't want to give up the rest of the summer at the pool but I don't know of a good way to stop him from thinking it's fun to gargle with the pool water. Maybe I can bring along a toothbrush or something?

I doubt it came from the pool as the chlorine would have killed it but it could have come from the kids playing with a toy or hugging, etc. It is just one of those childhood diseases that spreads pretty easy. Chances are he was exposed somewhere else.

My DH got coxsackie virus a year ago from refilling his water bottle from the water fountain at work. it really hit him hard...i haven't seen him that sick in a long time. needless to say, he now carries a large jug of ice water with a drinking spout to work with him, so he doesn't need to use the water fountain any more. could your son have used a water fountain or touched something used by a sick child?

coxsackie b virus is not killed off by chlorine because of the greater resistance of viruses. Bacterial illness is killed by chlorine.

Yeah Chlorine takes a while to kill the bad bugs.

I'm really grossed out by public pools. I pray every time we go that we won't come home with a tummy bug.

Honestly, all I do is tell my kids that if they swallow water they WILL get sick..so they always swim with their mouths shut (or try anyway)

My daughter had it the second semester of her freshman year at college. It was horrible. I agree with this poster, it was one of the sickest times she ever had. We were told that she could have picked it up anywhere. She's very particular about hand washing, etc. (in a medical profession), but that one slipped up on her. After watching her, I sure never want it.

OP, have you tried reminding your child that you think getting the water in his mouth is what made him sick? If he was very sick (I know DD's mouth hurt very much), it might help him to remember. You might remind him every time he goes in the pool.

Poor guy! No fun at all! My dcs got if from another kid at playgroup. It was just about over when the mom said, "What are these funny spots on my dd?" Thanks, lady...too little, too late! My friend's dd picked it up at WDW. It is very contagious, and our Dr. said it was harder on adults!
