Court Attire- do you dress up?

If I am a participant - witness, plantiff (never want to be the defendant!) - I wear a suit. Full stop. No other option. If I am on the jury, business casual. Yes I 'pay their wages' but, just like with priests at church, I owe judges and the court system some respect and will not show up in an outfit I'd wear to bed. I 'pay the wages' of the President and Congress too and would never think of meeting them in shorts and a tank top.

I wouldn't think twice about it. Are they any better than you or I? In most cases, I'd say that they are worse human beings. Why let the government place this sort of power over you?

DisneyBamaFan, I usually agree with your views, but I must ask - if you were to meet with a client in your line of business - clearly, as an individual, they are no 'better' than you - but would you not dress up more than, say, your trip to the grocery store? I would think you would, bc you want to show them respect as the voice of authority in you situation - just as a judge would be in the court system.

Better than me? That might be too much. However.....

They are more educated that I am.

The judges are elected or appointed and they have more POWER than I would ever have.

You might not like it but that judge can throw you in jail for looking at him wrong. It's an thing that is called contempt of court.

I think the system is broken but there is NO WAY I am going to court where I could be in trouble for traffic or killing my 3 year old where I would not be respectfully dressed.

If the law specified that I wear "xxx", I would meet that standard. Not out of respect for the court, or the judge, but out of respect for the law.

I can't necessarily say it's a law but is what the judge mandates, so it is carried out that way. Also have to say yes, sir and no, sir (or ma'am depending on which of my judges is on the bench). My one judge says it's not respect for him but respect for the system and the bench.

Hmm. Not sure. I went to a wake last night of a man who, while I respected and served as a father figure to me as a child, was not any 'better' a person than I am right now. I wore a nice black dress and some very fabulous heels. Should I have worn a tank top and shorts? maybe I could have, but, to me, that would not have been 'right'. Is respect not deserved in any capacity?

Absolutely - it is a part of the expectations associated with my job. A job that I took voluntarily.

To be clear - If I ever find myself at the mercy of a judge, I will dress in my finest suit and kiss the judge's behind. I am not stupid. (well, that is debatable :upsidedow)

The only times I have ever appeared in court were when I divorced my first husband; numerous times to try to get him to pay his child support (waste of time); and for jury duty.. Every single time I dressed appropriately - a ladies dress suit..

There are judges out there who will literally scold people and toss them out of the courtroom if they don't dress appropriately.. That wasn't a chance I was ever willing to take..

Yeah, and it is the system that I have lost respect for. I know that it is the best system in the world, but it is manipulated by the rich and takes advantage of the poor. It has become corrupt.

So now the court deserves the same respect shown to a loved one who has passed? :confused3

If I don't care for a person who has passed, I skip the wake and funeral.

If only our government had followed the plan laid out by those brilliant men. We walked away from their plan with the Civil War and stray further and further away every day.

I get closer every day. Frankly, I am not sure that America can be salvaged - or that we are worthy (as a society). But I don't want to get into a political discussion.

What I say to everyone that feels we are not worth it, I say. Move somewhere else then, So how that goes :rotfl2:

That is exactly the sort of attitude that makes us not worth it, IMO. We are an entitled society that thinks that America is better than anywhere else on the planet. Well, ask some of our fellow Dissers from other parts of the world. They aren't lining up to move here any time soon.

Then take a poll, find the best country for your needs and go there!
