Couples - King vs. Doubles? Need advice, please.

Last year DBF and I stayed in a room at ASMo with two double beds. One bed became the "junk pile" and we shared the other. We are both kinda Pooh-sized, so needless to say, this was rather uncomfortable. Luckily we were exhausted every night and it wasn't too hard to fall asleep anyway.

This year my DBF has requested that I try to get a king size bed at Pop. I'm all for this, except for a few points.

1. I know most, but not all, of the king size rooms are also handicap accessible, and I don't want to keep someone who really NEEDS it from having it.

2. Requesting a king seriously limits which rooms you can stay in, and while I wouldn't be devastated if we didn't, I'd really love to stay in either the Lady or the Tramp building.

Getting the doubles would make it alot easier to get into the Lady or Tramp buildings. The problem then becomes sleeping arrangements. I'm perfectly fine with us each having a double bed. DBF thinks we should share a bed, even though it would be too small, b/c that's what we're "supposed" to do.

I don't know where he's getting this "traditional" mindset all of a sudden. We've never done anything the way we're "supposed" to. We live together; we are engaged, but probably won't be getting married...at least not anytime in the forseeable future. (He's Catholic, I'm atheist. I won't do it his way, he won't do it mine, so we are at an impasse on this.) We will be celebrating our 6 year (of dating) anniversary while at WDW, so I can see some snuggling, but I don't do "adult recreation" in hotels. Just too icky for me. :scared: I have a hard enough time getting over the fact that someone else has slept on that same pillow.

What do other couples do? Do you share a small double, even though it's uncomfortable, but you are "together"? Do you each take a double and sleep 50's sitcom style, apart but comfortable? Or do you forgo location and take the king wherever you can get it?

We used to try to always get kings, but after being put into a few too many handicap accessible rooms we decided to just do a standard room, however it comes. This year we stayed at POFQ and had two doubles...and we both took one. Definitely 50's sitcom-style, but we both slept so well and neither one of us woke up cranky from a cramped nights sleep.

haha...I even did this on my Honeymoon at GF way back when. Maybe that's why we're divorced now?

But seriously. We'd been together for 3+ years, and shared a queen bed at home. If we wanted cuddle time, we'd share a bed, and often fall asleep there. But when we wanted to just fall down exhausted and sleep, especially if one wasn't quite ready for sleep (usually me and my mind going 100mph), we used separate beds, no biggie.

I think my husband and I are spoiled. We have a King bed at home and on our honeymoon in Feb. we got a King and it was wonderful.
We were at All-Star Music and I didn't expect it at all, but it was lovely. The room was bigger and it made our week stay a little more comfortable.

We have a King at home, but when we travel, and are given doubles, we just each call a bed, and we sleep separate because DH and I don't share well. :lmao: We both need our space, and in going from a King to a double...we don't even try. We usually have "visits," then it's each to their own bed. :rotfl:

Okay, this just made me laugh sweetie. Maybe you should have honeymooned at POFQ where you can get a guaranteed king room. . .ROFLMAO. . .Saved GF for an anniversary or something.

Seriously, there have been times when I would have preferred to have a separate bed or couch or something. I sleep really well alone and have a hard time when someone is next to me if all I want is sleep. I love the idea of a "visit" then sleep later. I will remember this one next time I set up house with someone. . .

We honeymooned at POP Century back in November 2006. We paid for the Preferred Room Location, requested a king size bed, and got it. I don’t remember if it was in a handicapped room, but I kinda like them anyhow.

my GF and I also didn't mind the double beds...we have a queen at home which gives us more than enough room, but we both wanted to be as comfortable as possible since you're just exhaused after spending 14 hours walking around

Sometimes on trips we enjoy a king bed. It is NOT a necessity.

At home we sleep in a double bed. We always will. I inherited three antique beds--two double and one "three quarter" which is between the size of a single and a double and requires a special ordered mattress. I am NOT giving up the beds that have been in my family for generations.

We are NOT small people. I am 6'0" and down to 224. DW is lets say larger than I am. We have slept in the three quarter bed together. It was cozy but perfectly comfortable, and we slept well.

I agree with whichever PP who preferred that couples sleep together. I do not sleep as well when DW is not in the bed beside me. There has to be a GOOD reason for us not to sleep together--like one of us is out of town and the other is at home so we cant. We NEVER sleep apart when we are in the same place.

In conclusion, a king bed is nice, but IMO it is certainly not required. I agree about not wanting a handicapped room unless it is the only one available. I really dont like the handicapped showers. I also get the desire for a particular building. I did not make any requests like that because I just dont know what I want. Next time I might. Maybe you can rank your requests: 1) the building you want, 2) a nonhandicapped room, 3) a king bed. That way you get the building, and if a nonhandicapped king happens to be available in that building, you could get that.

Whatever you decide, have a magical trip.

We travel quite a bit, and frankly, I prefer having the two beds, one reason being similar to yours, in that the 'spare' bed is used as a repository of stuff, and also because no matter the size of the bed, DH ends up hogging 80% of the space and I get squished near the headboard. Sometimes we end up sleeping on both beds because one of us might have trouble getting to sleep immediately. Sleeping a few feet away from each other is not as bad as it sounds, especially when one of us (that would be ME) tends to be a light sleeper and sometimes one of us (that would be HIM) has allergies acting up that cause a 'bit' of snoring. He's a merchant marine, gone for 4 months at a time, so while we are used to spending time apart, it is not the end of the world if we spend one night or so not intertwined. A good night's sleep is well worth the effort of two beds.

I don't think you need to worry about #1. You will not be given a king room over someone who needs the handicap accessiblity.

DH and I ask for a king when we stay at a value resort. 2 out of 2 times at POP we did NOT get a king. In that case we just each take a bed and are comfortable. And I will not pay extra to have a king at a moderate.

:cheer2::cheer2::cheer2:

and also because no matter the size of the bed, DH ends up hogging 80% of the space and I get squished near the headboard.

I'm so glad someone else has this problem! I brought up requesting a king at Pop and DBF's reply was: "Why? I'll just push you over to the edge of the bed and you'll be squished anyway." :sad2:

Unless it's a simple "which do you want" sort of thing to specify, I take whatever. We have a King at home and I often think they should make bigger beds. lol Sometimes it's even more expensive and I won't bother. It might depend on the trip. After our Disney Cruise and being squished into that small bed for 7 nights, when we got to our hotel in Cocoa, I was more than fine with the separate doubles. (We're not tiny, but not huge people either.) I just booked the pop again and I didn't specify, so I'm guessing it will be doubles and I'll be fine with that. There are plenty of advantages to having my own space to sleep.

right there with you b/c DH and I are considering an adult-only trip for our anniversary this December and even though we are very small people we are just not comfortable unless we have the King bed we are used to sleeping in. We are trying to decide where to stay right now but I think we will wind up spending extra for the king if we do coronado.

DH and I have always requested a King bed :hug:and never gotten a handicap accessible room. We prefer the King bed to doubles, becuase we feel that there is more space in the room and they are usually in a quiter area of the resort. We are willing to take a few more steps to have a quiter area. So its a good night sleep all around which is necessary at the World to be able to keep up the pace with out getting grouchy. I would request a King bed and If you get there and it is a handicap room which I belive that you can ask upon check then just tell them that you would prefer to not to take up a room that was designed for someone who needs it, and tell them a double would be fine. I'm sure it will not be a issue.

Also about the pillow thing. I'm that way to. I always bring my own pillow for Dh and myself no matter where we travel. It really make a big difference and we seem to sleep better. Just a thought, and yes and I have carried on the plane in a plastic see through pillow bag, and not had any problems. On one trip we brought a extra suitcase with the pillows crammed in there, and then use a space bag to bring them back with " stuff " :rolleyes:that we bought worked out great.

;) DH and I sleep in a King at home. He is a firefighter and does not sleep well anymore. Some nights he sleeps with me in the King other nights when I am going to work the next morning, and he is not, he uses the twin bed in his office. We love each other very much and have been married for 15 years. I also use a CPAP and sometimes the white noise and air it blows out keeps him awake--yet when I don't weart it, I raise the roof. He is getting a sleep study in June thank goodness. Our joke with one another is that any time we travel it is a "vacation" which allows us to affectionately enjoy two double beds. I get the bed nearest to the wall and he sleeps close to the door......after reading the fire exit instructions on the back of the door. Now that I look back at this paragraph....maybe we do have issues:lmao:

We have a regular double bed at home so the doubles at a hotel are no problem. In fact, if we happen to get a room in a hotel with a queen or king we end up only taking up half of it. Guess that's why we'll be celebrating our 41st anniversary at POR in September.

Last time we stayed at ASMu and requested a king bed. We received one and it was a standard king bed room. It never hurts to ask.
