Just to save me from searching (I'm lazy), how many rides will there be in the area, and what type of rides?

I believe I read Dueling Dragons was being transformed into a HP themed coaster. What exactly is the Forbidden Journey? Roller Coaster, Dark Ride, Motion Simulator?

Dueling Dragons is being rethemed to Dragons Challenge

Flight of the Unicorn is being rethemed to Flight of the Hippogriff

HP and the Forbidden Journey is a new dark ride using the Kuka robocoaster technology - height restriction is 48 inches. The queue is interactive and contains locations like the Great Hall, Room of Requirement and Dumbledore's Office.

The area also contains several shops from the HP books (Honeydukes, Zonkos, Ollivander's, Owl Post), including interactive elements like the wand choosing the wizard at Ollivander's and a howler at the Owl Post. Cards/letters can be sent with a Hogsmeade postmark.

Food and drink from HP will include butterbeer (can't wait!) and a counter service restaurant called Three Broomsticks.

The video from the Ellen show also shows performances from the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students, and there is supposed to be a frog choir that performs several times a day.

What is this? Anything comparable I could check out?
This is the new state-of-the-art attraction and nothing in the world is like it. It's been kept a tightly guarded secret...for the most part.

Like Metro said, there's nothing else like it. Sum of All Thrills at Epcot uses Kuka technology on a much smaller scale, but SoAT stays in one place and shows images of the rollercoaster you designed on a screen in front of you. The ride vehicles at HP and the FJ will travel throughout the ride. There's a bit of a description here:

Even non-HP fans will probably appreciate the detail and technology of the ride. I've never been a big fan of the Spiderman comics or movies, but it's an awesome ride!

thanks - how long before the offical opening to the do annual passholder previews ??

There is no telling. I know they're doing employee soft opening first, then of course will be media, followed by any soft openings they do for the public (IF they do them).
