First off.. And the big one...

Doing Disneyland solo? Most of the threads I've looked at were from people who were in driving distance of Disneyland. I'm actually in Florida.. And a female that would be alone....I've never flown alone... Is this idea crazy?

Second, what's the slowest time in April or May to go?

Third, best economy hotel to stay at considering I will have no personal transportation of my own

Fourth, When do deals usually come out for April/May?

Fifth, again am I crazy?

To make this happen I will have to cancel myJanuary trip to WDW but I've been there 5 times in the past 13 months so I think I can get over it. Disneyland will require some further saving so I would have to push that trip further back if I chose to go there instead.

I've been wanting to visit Disneyland for a while it just scares me a little to be that far from home alone. At WDW I'm a phone call and 3 1/2 hours away from family should I need them.

Thank you everyone for your time

For sure go!

Try to fly into SNA / John Wayne airport. If the price is similar...

Stay across the street from the main gate.. You will just be walking one block and it is a safe one block...

You are not crazy... There are really no deals... you can try and save on your ticket. (Get a park hopper). Hotel is separate from ticket. There is no meal plan...

Have Fun!

Key is to wake up early and be at the DCA gates 45 minutes gates open. However with single rider lines likely not a big deal if you are 30 min early...

Arrive at DL 30 minutes early...

Healthy food choice is French Market in DL.

I would say do not go to the garden walk area to shop (Several miles away). Fairly safe but:

1) Garden walk is not that big of a deal
2) Slightly less safe. I would avoid altogether...

Most people do not go there anyways....

Totally not crazy! DLR is an awesome place and sometimes I'll pop into the park alone.

If you can afford it, I highly recommend staying on site. The Grand Californian is a beautiful hotel and you have the added security of Disney while you are on property and walking to/from your room.

Here are a couple of maps to show the places to stay around the parks.

We have stayed at the Desert Inn and Suites many times and will stay there on future trips. It's safe, close, clean and comfortable.

If you think you'll be going, book a room now! The sooner you book the better the rate will be. If you look at the dates in May from the 10th to about the 31st, you can get a room at DI&S for $79/nt Sun - Thur. Fri and Sat are a little more. They only ask for a credit card to hold the reservation. If you decide not to go you can cancel and not loose any money.

The Tropicana is another popular place to stay. Their rates are usually around $120/nt. Best Western Park Place Inn is one more. Again, they're higher.

As far as deals...... If you wait for a deal, you most likely will pay more. I find the best deal is to book early and watch for deals to pop-up. If a deal does pop-up then I call to get an adjustment on the reservation. I know with the DI&S, booking early always gets me the best nightly rate.

April will still be Spring Break busy for many schools. Avoid Mother's day weekend in May. In May there will be a few Grad Nights. I'd choose something from May 11th thru the end of the month.

Being a solo trip you can take advantage of the single rider lines.

Book a room now and start your planning. You'll have a great time.

Easy airports are Orange County (SNA) or Long Beach (LGB).

I'm doing a solo trip to DL next week. Splurging and staying at the DLH. I booked a trip through Disney (usually I do AAA, but they were sold out of the room category I wanted.) I am celebrating being cancer free! I originally had a girl's trip booked with my friends for May, but had to cancel due to chemotherapy.

I fly into SNA and with the package from Disney, I paid for shuttle service to and from the hotel. I even made reservations for all the things I want to do, like lunch at the Carthay Circle, and a Fantasmic Dinner at the Blue Bayou. Oh and tours! Doing all the things I like! I can shop as much as I want, ride everything I want over and over, catch a show, take pictures and just sit and people watch. My last two trips with my DH it was GO GO GO! I am so excited to do anything I want to do!!

Flying by yourself is also easy, I pop on headphones and I am good to go! I try to keep my carry-on on the small side, as I have back issues and lifting it into the overhead is sometimes difficult, but usually someone will help.

Have fun, you can totally do this!

(I went to England by myself for my 21st birthday, eons ago, and fly regulary (at least once a year) by myself and never have had any issues, I even managed to get TSA Pre-check on my last flight! I am also an only child so that may play into it, I go out to eat and movies all the time by myself.)

First off.. CONGRATULATIONS Krispin! That is so amazing!

Thank you everyone for your input you've given me the courage to do this! I wish I had people who loved disney to go with me but I've been doing WDW solo for a year now because I refuse to not enjoy something of love just because no one else wants to go with me. This shouldn't be any different! Thank you all!

I just did a solo trip in October for my birthday and it was one of the best vacations I've ever had.

Check out my signature for my trip report.

As for hotels, I stayed at the Howard Johnson, and though I'm used to walking everywhere (I work in downtown San Francisco and don't own a car), I found that walk to be pretty far, especially after a long day/night and once when I wasn't feeling great. There are hotels that would be just as nice that are closer and around the same price, so next time I'll choose something closer to the main gates.

Speaking of being from San Francisco, the heat was a problem for me and I had to take breaks every afternoon. Being from where you are, you may do better than me in that respect.

One piece of advice I've been giving people is to adjust your expectations on what you can do. I was there four full days and didn't have anyone to slow me down, and still didn't see a lot. And that's okay. I did the highlights, found a bunch of new favorites (Peter Pan! Goofy's Kitchen!) and had the time of my life.

Go. For serious.

If you've been wanting to visit Disneyland for a while, GO! You'll have a great time!!!
I'm a female and I usually fly solo. It's totally do-able. Catch a shuttle from the airport to your hotel. Like others who've posted, I recommend a hotel close to DL, but have stayed as far away as the Motel 6 on Disney Way. Keep in mind that if you do stay further away, you will need to catch a bus or a cab back to the hotel at night. Again, do-able, but you may not feel as safe doing that. Something close by would probably be better for you, at least for this trip. The area around DL is brightly lit and there are lots of people walking around, even in the evenings, (walking to restaurants or back to their hotels) so you will not be alone.
In answer to your fifth question, a lot of us are crazy. That's why we're here.

As others have noted, both April and May will have their periods of crowds.

Easter is on April 5th in 2015, which means Spring Break crowds will be expected in at least early April. It's hard to say for sure what Disney will do in terms of Spring Break. This year, Easter was on 4/20, which was at the end of Disneyland's Spring Break schedule. With Easter being early this year, I don't know if Spring Break will again end with Easter or if it'll extend a week past Easter. The reason this matters is that there is a marked difference in terms of operating hours and entertainment offerings between Spring Break and after-Spring Break. During "Spring Break", the parks will be running long hours with full entertainment during this period (e.g., fireworks nightly). After that, nightly entertainment is reduced and concentrated on weekends. There are rumors that WoC is going down for a lengthy refurb and that F! will be presented nightly, but I don't know if that dates have yet been confirmed. There are also rumors that there will be a new fireworks show for the 60th anniversary, so it's not known when that will debut and what will be presented in the winter and spring (after Believe....In Holiday Magic ends and before the 60th anniversary show starts).

Memorial Day weekend has been the kick off to the summer season for the last couple of years, so crowds tend to be high on that weekend. They've done the 24-hour day on the Friday before Memorial Day in 2013 and 2014, which means high crowds that weekend.

If the goal is to avoid crowds, I would probably aim for middle- to late-April or middle-May, but it will mean shorter park hours and reduced entertainment.

I was looking at the last week of April (April 26-May 1) which is Sunday - Friday.

I was looking at travelocity's flight & hotel packages and they seem reasonable. I don't think I could afford to stay at a Disney hotel at $200+ a night. I need to research the shuttle services, I'm assuming you can't use Disney's airport shuttle if you're not staying at their hotels?

My other option is to keep my WDW vacation in January and go to Disneyland in September (the week with the crowd levels at a 1)

That should be a pretty good time, in terms of crowds.

DLR doesn't have anything like DME. There is no exclusive shuttle service for onsite guests.

When in September are thinking of going? With that low of crowd level (be careful when making decisions based on crowd calendars for DLR - they don't seem as reliable as they are for WDW - at least based on reports here on the Dis), I'm guessing you're looking at the first two weeks in September. It's worth noting that during this period, the park is transitioning to HalloweenTime. HM and Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree will likely be closed for the first half of September. Space Mtn will close for 5 days before the start of HalloweenTime. (If I had to guess, I'd go with HalloweenTime starting on 9/11/15.)

Good for you! Going solo will be awesome since you won't have to compromise on plans. :)
We used Priceline last time for a hotel near Disneyland (but not walking distance). I went for a 4 star hotel and got the Anaheim Marriott. The Anaheim resort shuttle stop was right outside the door and costs $6 per day I believe, maybe $7. So easy! Actually even easier and closer than WDW shuttles. I would personally get a higher quality hotel instead of trying to stay within walking distance, but that's just me.

AND Thank-you for the well wishes!!!

I am using Super Shuttle from the airport to the hotel and vice-versa...

And one thing I like to mention is that the reason I book through AAA or Walt Disney Travel is that you can make payments. You pay a deposit and then make payments (you choose the amount). The final payment is due a month before your date of arrival. And you can book the Disney Hotels OR one of the near-by Good Neighbor Hotels. You can even pre-pay for your ground transportation (there are a couple different options), and character meals. So if you know your dates now, it never hurts to look into that. Paying a little at a time makes it easier instead of just one giant chunk. Then about three weeks before your trip you get a small box in the mail with all of your travel documents, park ticket, and vouchers that you just hand to the driver of your ground transport, when your checking in, etc. They also include a cute luggage tag and a voucher for a pin and lanyard.

I haven't been to DLR yet (reading here to learn a lot for our trip next year!) but as for traveling solo - don't be afraid and no, you are not crazy. I have had the opportunity to do a lot of solo travel, even after my marriage (for speaking engagements). Sometimes totally alone and sometimes with a baby in tow. Traveling alone can be very fulfilling - taking an adventure without having to rely on anyone. I just take a good book on my kindle for the plane and enjoy people watching in the airport or while I'm eating out. My only safety tips: Get a back up charger (or two) for your phone, like the charger sticks. Be aware of your surroundings and the people nearby. When I walk at night I always call someone, and they know that it might not be the best conversation (I'm usually a little distracted watching around me) but they know I'm doing it to be safe so it doesn't matter.

Have fun! Solo trips are so much fun. I did WWoHP solo recently and it was fabulous.

Absolutely go for it! I do lots of flying on my own, domestic and international. Never have any problems. I loved the solo parts of my last trip to DLR. Flew there and back solo (from Australia via Fiji) and took the SuperShuttle from LAX (had pre-booked inc. tip so I didn't have to worry about having small change).

I booked through Priceline and got the Red Lion Hotel, which was about a 15 minute walk. I didn't have any problem with it, even late at night after the parks closed. However, if you're unsure, you may feel better about staying at one of the places across the road. When my parents arrived in Anaheim, we all moved into a suite at Desert Inn & Suites, which I would recommend as well-priced, well-located basic accommodation.

If you're used to going to WDW solo, you shouldn't have any problems at the parks. It's so much fun to just be able to do exactly what you want to do at any given point in time! Some of the single rider lines are good value too. Don't be shy about getting in line for a character either. Some of the best character interactions I had were when I was on my own.

FWIW I also tacked on a few days to the end of my trip, where I was solo again. I flew to Phoenix, then onto San Antonio, staying a couple of nights in both places, hired cars and went sight-seeing. I then flew back home to Melbourne via Dallas, LAX, Fiji and Sydney. While I'll admit I would have enjoyed company on some of those flights, and especially on the night I was stuck at the rather isolated hotel in Phoenix because of storms and flash flooding, I never had any problems. At airports, it's usually just a matter of following the crowds or the signs. Plus, there are always people around to ask if you get lost.

I have traveled quite a bit by myself...my last trip was solo to WDW. You'll be fine!

I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I haven't been online much the last few days (my father-in-law passed on this weekend), so I missed this post yesterday, and there's so much I want to comment on!

First off.. And the big one...

Doing Disneyland solo? Most of the threads I've looked at were from people who were in driving distance of Disneyland. I'm actually in Florida.. And a female that would be alone....I've never flown alone... Is this idea crazy?

I LOVE my solo DLR trips. Some of my favorite trips of all time! I'm actually going by myself in Feb 2015--just 64 more days! The DLR area is safe and comfortable in my opinion. I've been there as a single 30-something woman, and with my at-the-time-8yo DD. Flying alone doesn't phase me--I pack a good book (Kindle, nook) or two, make sure to have my favorite games on my phone, and a full battery for any electronic device. I plan layovers to happen at meal times when possible, and I try to just do carry-ons so that I don't have to worry about baggage claim or lost luggage. It seems "safe" to me--I mean, no one knows if my husband is coming to pick me up, or if I'm an undercover officer, or... or... You get my point. It's only "unsafe" if you are "unsafe" about traveling. I keep myself aware of my surroundings, act like I know what's going on, and things go fairly smoothly.
Second, what's the slowest time in April or May to go?
I've gone in early May before, and enjoyed it. It was just warm enough to like the water rides, and Grad Nights hadn't started yet. I went over a long weekend, and crowds weren't bad.
Third, best economy hotel to stay at considering I will have no personal transportation of my own
DLR only has 3 hotels of their own "on site." This is a big difference between DL and WDW. DLR is built in the middle of the city (more accurately, the city grew in around DLR), and you can stay off-site and be *closer* (yes, CLOSER) to the front gates than if you stayed at the Disneyland Hotel. Amazing, right? We usually stay at the Desert Inn and Suites (across the street from the pedestrian entrance). The sooner you book, the less their rates are (sometimes as low as $69/night!), but be aware they have a 48 hour cancellation policy. As I stated early, my FIL just passed away, and I had to cancel my trip for this weekend. Because I did it at 24 hours before check-in, I've already been charged my first night. We won't discuss how frustrated I am with their manager right now! A little understanding, please! It's not like they are a chain hotel that can't deviate from corporate policy. Other than that, their beds are hard, and I'm bringing an air mattress to sleep on over the mattress. I've stayed at the Super 8 on Katella (about a 15 minute walk, maybe less if you don't get pulled into the 7-11 to buy cheaper soda!). Comfortable beds, newly renovated over the past 2-3 years, and $75/night or so!
Fourth, When do deals usually come out for April/May?
This is another DL vs WDW difference. There's not usually promotions for DLR like there is for WDW. There isn't a "stay here, eat free" deal... The room deals are usually in the 20% range. ... Sometimes you can find a Buy-3-days-get-a-4th-free ticket deals (check orbitz.com and way.com for this deal, I can't remember if either have it in place right now).
Fifth, again am I crazy?
This depends on who you ask ;) Around here? No, no one will say you are crazy/stupid/whatever, because there's lots of us "soloists!"
To make this happen I will have to cancel myJanuary trip to WDW but I've been there 5 times in the past 13 months so I think I can get over it. Disneyland will require some further saving so I would have to push that trip further back if I chose to go there instead.
Why additional savings for DLR? I know when I have looked, coming from the west coast to WDW, the prices are fairly similar (even considering airfare) when all is said and done. Another DLR difference is that it's often significantly cheaper to *not* do vacation packages. It's usually cheaper to do each thing separately (flight, hotel, tickets, meals, etc).
I've been wanting to visit Disneyland for a while it just scares me a little to be that far from home alone. At WDW I'm a phone call and 3 1/2 hours away from family should I need them.
While I understand where you are coming from (and believe me, it took a HIGE leap of faith for my first DLR trip as an adult--a single mom, never flown before, with a special needs child!), I think there's something empowering for a woman to know she can travel and explore without needing a man (or even another woman) there to keep her safe. The exhilaration you will have after your trip may spur even more solo vacations!

Being a solo trip you can take advantage of the single rider lines.

Easy airports are Orange County (SNA) or Long Beach (LGB).

Geemo

Single rider lines are the bestest part of a solo trip, I believe :) Well, maybe that and not hearing hubby and kids snoring, farting, arguing, wrestling...

I prefer SNA to fly into. It's small, and the signage for ground transportation is easy to follow. I'm trying LGB for the first time in Feb.

Thank you everyone for your input you've given me the courage to do this! I wish I had people who loved disney to go with me but I've been doing WDW solo for a year now because I refuse to not enjoy something of love just because no one else wants to go with me. Yay! You will have a FANTASTIC TIME!

There are hotels that would be just as nice that are closer and around the same price, so next time I'll choose something closer to the main gates.
I've always felt like HoJo seemed "so far" away... No idea why. I'm always surprised by how close people think it is.

I think this is all what you make of it. After 3 days, I felt like I had seen everything I wanted, and rode every ride as many times as I desired. I'll admit I'm rope-drop-close-the-place-out-no-breaks, though, which definitely affects how much you see/do.
I was looking at the last week of April (April 26-May 1) which is Sunday - Friday.
Personally, I think this is a GREAT time to go. You'll have the night time entertainment on Sunday and Friday. Otherwise, the hours may be a little shorter, but not bad, in my opinion.
I was looking at travelocity's flight & hotel packages and they seem reasonable. I don't think I could afford to stay at a Disney hotel at $200+ a night. I need to research the shuttle services, I'm assuming you can't use Disney's airport shuttle if you're not staying at their hotels?
DLR doesn't have a shuttle like WDW. Speaking of the differences (again :) ), Hydroguy has a sticky thread (see the top of the thread lists), and that may help explain a lot of the DLR/WDW differences! It's called something like "DLR for WDW vets." There are shuttles (that you pay for, somewhere in the $35-40 range, each way), or taxi services (about $45 from SNA or LGB each way).
My other option is to keep my WDW vacation in January and go to Disneyland in September (the week with the crowd levels at a 1)
[/QUOTE]
Crowd predictions at DLR are notoriously wrong. Part of that is because of Cars Land--California Adventure added Cars Land just 2 years ago (Aug 2012, I think it was), so there isn't much historical data to go off to give an idea of crowds. Also, DLR is a "locals' park," meaning that locals will just pop in for a few hours randomly. Maybe schools are out for the day for a furlough day, or another school district has time off, or it's just Friday night and kids want to be there.... All these things make it more difficult to assess and predict crowd levels ahead of time at DLR.

Thank you all again for the input! I feel much better now about going solo!

Another DLR difference is that it's often significantly cheaper to *not* do vacation packages. It's usually cheaper to do each thing separately (flight, hotel, tickets, meals, etc). .

Thank you for mentioning that! I thought I was doing my calculations wrong or something because it seemed a bit more expensive when I bundled things through the disney website, it wasn't adding up to the extent of several hundred dollars
