We actually thought of Jasmine, but she just doesn't look like a Jasmine (I know you dog owners know what I mean--a name has to fit just right).
My mom likes Molly. Sadie has also come up. I also like Liberty.
I thought about Mindy--our last name is McConnell, so she'd be Mindy McConnell, just like Mork and Mindy . But if she gets to be really big, Mindy wouldn't work right either--it is more of a petite cheerleader name.
It can't be Raven--I can't stand Raven on Disney channel, I know I'm in the minority, but I can't be in the room when that show is on!
I know she'll be a chewer; that's why she'll be caged when alone. Crate training is so much easier than driving home in dread wondering what the dog ate today!

Congrats on your new puppy. All my dogs have been from shelters. Just dont expect her to be the same as Ranger. We adopted a shelter dog last year after we had our Mindy put to sleep (she was 15). Our new addition has her own strong personality and it took a little getting used to. (She was 3 when we got her)

I love labs, I still miss my black lab Aretha. I called her Reethie a lot. Her grandparents used to include their grand dog in gift buying at holidays.

We have a bassett hound who found us, and she came named: Lazy Susan. She aint no black lab lemme tell ya! Boy is she stubborn!

Congratulations! I'm sure her name will come to you, although there have been some great suggestions. I especially like Luna...something about the moon and her dark coat just fits for me.


My aunt recently passed away unexpectedly, at the beginning of the summer. Her dog was everything to her, and, unfortunately, we couldn't find someone to take her. She was gentle and playful and loved people, but she was just too big to get along with our little terrier. My father ended up taking her to the Humane Society, where, hopefully, they're taking care of her.


She was a black lab mix too. Her name was September.

I think you should name her Shadow.

There's a female black lab mix on our block named Shadow--perfect name for a black dog.

I often think we should have named our black lab mix "Shadow" because that's what he is to me--he follows me everywhere just like a shadow. For some reason, he likes to sit on my feet too.

Our boy (who BTW is a totally awesome dog) is named Max. My son named him that after the Grinch's dog since he got Max for Christmas two years ago.

We have a black lab mix that we adopted from a shelter. Best dog in the world. One of the best things about "mix" dogs is that they are less likely to have genetic problems. They also are more likely to have a great personality.

We adopted our Rufus because DD was dateing a creep and she needed to break up with him, she just couldn't get the courage to do it. She found this puppy and fell in love. I told her I would buy the puppy for her if she would get rid of the boyfriend. Best deal I have ever made. DH thought I was crazy and we would end up with both boyfriend and dog, but the deal worked and the boyfriend was gone and Rufus has been a part of the family for almost 7 years now.

Congrats on your new sweet girl. I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect name. We have friends with a black lab named Ebony. It's perfect for her but you'll find the one that fits your girl.

Our sweet black lab mix is Mr. B He got his name from my mom who he "visited" for quite a while until we finally took him in, searched for his owners and finally gave up and kept him. Anyway, she called him Mr. Black and we shortened it. He is the sweetest dog I've ever know. And he has BLUE eyes (think he has a bit of huskey in there somewhere though he looks all lab) which draw a lot of attention. He is Isabella's heart's companion. He kisses her awake each morning, has to ride with me to take her safely to school and waits by the door for her to come home in the afternoon. He is a wonderful addition to our household. Our big brittany, Simon, died last autumn and our house was so empty. Not anymore!

As soon as I saw what breed she was the first name that popped into my head was Beauty as in Black Beauty. Of all the other names I've read here I like Shadow the most.

Our black lab /shepard mix is also named Shadow. Let me tell you it fits to a tee. Labs are loyal and our dog is always at our side(except when he is chasing his nemisis (es, i ?) in the back yard). Sometimes I feel like I am doing sinchronized walking when he is beside me walking down the stairs. He is my second black lab mix .

I must echo the sentiments previously expressed. Labs CHEW!! when they are puppies. He chewed imitation brick off my wall, holes in my wall and pulled the veneer panel off the end of one of the cabinets in the den. My first dog Buster, chewed all my flat shoes (that was really bad since I was 7 months pregnant and had feet the size of Texas)

Buster was named for the peanut parfait at Dairy Queen but
I say go with Shadow it is popular but it is fitting.

Then again , you can always follow the Jewish tradition an take the first letter of Ranger's name and come up with a name for your new dog, for example, Rover.
