My uncle is 79 and has had cancer in various forms since around 1980. Although he has fought and won many times, we have found out the end is very near. He has been in and out of the hospital since March due to a chronic infection. I was told today he has days to live and his organs are shutting down. I do not live nearby, and my aunt and cousins are very stoic and stingy with details.

My question is, how long could the process take? He does not want to have a breathing tube per his advance directive, but I am really trying to prepare myself. Any thoughts or experience would be most appreciated.

I think every person is different, but when I faced this with my dad he lasted about 48 hours. I am very sorry for your situation, but I hope this gives you some kind of frame of reference. Here is your hug too

I am sorry that this is happening to your Uncle.....I am sure you would like to be there for him and it is difficult when you live so far away. I do not know firsthand but I am thinking days once the organs start shutting down. Hugs

Every person is different of course. Sometimes some people linger for reasons no one understands. My mom lasted about 4 days when she started that process. I was so grateful that she did of course for many reasons. One of the main reasons is shortly before she slipped in a coma state she saw the angels that were there for her. She also saw the two sons that had died before her. I will never forget her huge smile and her face lightening up when she saw the boys. One of the boys died of non-hodgins lymphoma when he was 10 years old and the other died in an accident when he was 33. It was amazing. Here was this woman who was in so much pain and couldn't move yet when the angels came she lifted her arms to met them. I miss her so much. When I am having a bad day I think of that smile on her face and I am reminded that I will see her again someday.

Just an update. My uncle passed on 6/26 after a 20+ years battle with cancer. During all that time he was an inspiration to everyone and enjoyed his life to the fullest. He was first receiving chemo in 1980 and lived to be 78

Thank you to everyone who posted.

I'm sorry to read your uncle has passed away. Such a long time living with the beast.

What a wonderful way to be remembered as having lived your life to the fullest. That is inspirational!

My prayers are with your whole family.

Peace.
Colleen

To do battle for that long, what an incredible person. Thanks for letting us know that he is now at peace, no more battling for him. He did good..

I am sorry to hear about your uncle. Please take comfort in your memories. I will keep you in my prayers.

I have no answers about the illness, sorry, but I have hugs:hug: and prayers. also, you could share with him how Jesus died for Him so he can go to heaven.
prayers and:wizard: for you and your family.
