Could this be true?

A caller just called a local radio station in New Orleans and said that they were calling from Disney World. The caller said his child went to have his face painted and asked to have the American Flag painted on his face. The child was told by the CM that they were not allowed to paint the American Flag as it could offend other guests. The caller then said that they went around to other CMs and asked why their child couldn't have the American Flag painted on their face and were given the same answer. The caller then claimed that he was presently waiting for management to come tell him why Disney would not allow an American Flag to be painted on a child's face.

I have been to Disney World numerous times and don't even recall any face painting. Does anyone know where face painting is offered in Disney?

I really hope this story isn't true.

If it is true, there is probably a good explanation: many people think that it is offensive when others wear the flag as clothing, etc. They see it as a sign of disgrace when the flag should be flying.

I personally do not have a problem with this, so please don't flame me. :) I am just offering an idea as to why maybe they might think others might be offended.

I could accept that as a reasonable answer if they didn't sell T-shirts with the American Flag in the shape of Mickey's head.

Sounds kinda silly, especially considering that they are selling those flag pins and -shirts.

That is what I said when I heard it. I immediately starting trying to think if I even saw anyone doing face painting at DW. I also thought of all the flag t-shirts with Mickey's head that we bought last year. I think the caller was probably making up the story.

Since I am a Disney fanatic, I had friends calling me and asking if I heard what the caller said. I told them that I had a hard time believing it and I would put a post on the boards to see if anyone had ever heard or seen such a thing.

The only place I've ever seen face painting was at AK and then they would only do animals.

no idea why they would do that. but i do recall a place in MK. i think it was in toontown. it was just a little square with some people set up there. they turned some little girls face into the most beautiful butterfly~the only reason i remember it.

I know they have a face-painting kiosk at Boardwalk as well, however, I've only seen animal faces done, too. Interesting............

A t-shirt with stars and stripes is technically not an American flag.
You'll see red & white stripes and white stars on a blue background on many items(Disney and otherwise), but it's not a flag.

I have seen face painting at Epcot, --those beautiful butterflies. I haven't really seen it anywhere else.

I know of two areas at MGM where they do it - over by Pizza Planet/Muppets and the other is by the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground area.

I think that technically its illegal to use the American Flag as part of a marketing plan or to sell things. I am trying to remember this from one of my marketing classes in college - and not being an attorney I'm not sure, but I remember a lengthy discussion about how the use of the flag on clothing or in advertisements (although nearly impossible to enforce) is against some law. I do know that no more patriotic than I am it makes me furious when I see flags hanging at houses, car dealerships or whatever 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - its disrespectful.

With that said I'm not sure why they would decline when other flag oriented paraphanalia is being sold.

MelissaThePooh,

You're right. The flag is not supposed to be used for any advertising purposes in any way and not to be used for wearing apparel, bedding or drapery.

I actually looked up flag etiquette because my DH and I were having a discussion it because he said it wasn't to be used on clothes and not everyone should salute it. I didn't believe him. Well, he was right-it isn't supposed to be used on clothes and only certain members of the military should salute it-.

I think the particular site I looked at had 23 specific rules for the flag.

I turned it into a little history lesson for my son. I certainly learned a lot from the site.

My DD has had her face painted many times at MK and at AK. They have a board full of different styles you can choose from, mostly animals, fairies, and Minnie Mouse I think.
I do know that they are not employees of Disney and that they are Independent contactors. I know they also have a contract with Universal Studios. Not sure if the American Flag rule is theirs or Disney's:confused:

floridafam~ do you have a link for the website you used to look up flag etiquette? if you could post it, i would be grateful.

While it is technically "illegal" to use the flag as part of clothing and such, there is not "penalty" clause for doing so. Another words, the code only is for the proper use and display of the flag and you won't be subjected to arrest or fines for hanging up the flag improperly.

Update: In stand somewhat corrected, there is a fine for using the flag for advertising purposes, but I believe that clause it not enforced.

Hmm... concerning the original post.. I do know that they offer face painting throughout the parks... my little sister had her face painted in Toon Town and the next day we both got face painting at AK.. so yes they do face paintings. As for the no flag rule I think that's been decided... some people might find it offensive or what not... but the thing that's got me is that the person said they were calling from WDW. Now was the program about anything in particular or was it just a random call? I use to live in New Orleans so I was just wondering. I mean I don't think I'd go on vacation and call a radio station in another state to complain. I probably also wouldn't know the phone number either.. but that's just me.:)

Please don't take any offense to this but until this is documented in the media I tend not to believe this kind of stuff. It just seems a little odd that in the middle of the ordeal the person took the time to contact his local radio station from Orlando? Very strange.

The caller was calling into "The David Tyree Show" on wwl 870 a.m. He takes calls on all different topics (mostly the war lately) and it is not uncommon for someone to call in from their vacation. While I personally would not call a talk show while on vacation, others do.
