Could someone tell me why

Most states have felony provisions where animal cruelty is concerned. Click here to find out what the law has to say on the subject in your own particular state.

I am just totally appalled that anyone would think it okay to harm a creature just because they can and that ANYONE would condone such treatment. These types of laws are nothing new, so anyone with even the most basic of knowledge where the law is concerned should KNOW cruelty to animals is a criminal matter.

A lot of people jumping to strange conclusions here. No one said you were a messy slob if you had a dog, only that they don't want to deal with the mess of a dog in their own home. The only "putting up" that was mentioned in regards to trick or treating was that someone had expected any animal that might lunge at children to be put up.

I have a dog those things seem very reasonable to me. I don't take my dog univited into people's homes. I don't put my dog in a crowd so thick that she could lick, sniff, jump on or bother a stranger. I also don't allow my dog to lunge at children, even if they are on my front porch. I have a dog and I clean up her messes because I love her, but I don't feel the need to be all insulted and pretend she never makes a mess. Heck, even my non-shedding dog makes messes. We have some scratch marks on doorways, our sliding glass door is a mess, and she has a fussy stomach issue that isn't always pretty.

If people come into my home, they have to deal with my dog. Honestly, she's spoiled rotten and won't let them alone until she has been given attention. But I will never force her on others in public. Perfectly reasonable IMO.

As for the dog in my own house - My dog barks at the front door so I choose to keep her in the other room if I know trick or treaters (who, where I live are small children) are coming. IMO that is also perfectly reasonable. Why would I allow her to do something that I know is going to frighten the little kids I've "invited" by participating in the ToT tradition? If I don't want to keep her out of the doorway I would choose not to participate in ToT.

Thank you for this post! I thought suddenly I'd sprouted horns and a tail and had fido on a spit in my back yard for a minute there! But then, it is the Dis.

I realize you're not trying to impose your views on me, but what about the law? Are you seriously backing criminal activity as if it's ok because of your own personal beliefs?

Well hell everyone, I announce that today the speed limit is going to be 105 MPH because I don't want to drive 55! I won't try to impose that onto you, but it's okay for anyone who also doesn't want to drive the normal speed limit. Who is with me?

Hence:

I won't impose my view on you, you don't impose yours on me, as long as we are living within the boundaries of the law we can all live happily together.

If the raising of an animal is legal and the method of skinning them is legal I have no problem with it. If it is illegal and you get caught you will serve whatever jail time is mandated or pay whatever fine is levied.

If you chose to do it anyway as long as it isn't harming me it is between you and the law and I am not getting involved. I care much more about crimes against people than against property, even if that property happens to be alive. Much like if you chose to drive 105 instead of 55 and are caught you will have to pay a fine. I don't care that you speed provided you don't run into me.

My goodness, Firedancer, you have an unusual way of looking at the world.

Like dogs, had one for 13 years that I miss like heck. Didn't consider him "property"...he was my pet. House didn't smell. There wasn't hair everywhere because I cleaned. I'd put the dog in another room if someone who had an "issue" with dogs came over. I am fairly certain the dog did not mind lying on my bed with his fuzzy toy napping while the company was about. ;) I walked him on a leash, didn't let him jump on people, kept him away if we were approaching soemone who was looking at him with "trepidation". If he was not ona leash, he was in my fenced in back yard. Halloween didn't impress him...he might look up when the doorbell rang, but he didn't really "charge" the door, growl or do anything really scary. He had an advanced degree in napping...that was what he was good at! ;)

Like cats, but not as much as dogs.

Couldn't picture skinning any animal alive.

I agree, by the way, that kids make more of a mess than animals...
And the older ones drive and go out on dates and buy expensive clothes and... That's why we call our dog "the good kid", even if he too is a PITA sometimes. (Often.)
I am an animal lover but I always take the time to put my dogs/cats/ whatever in a different room if I have guests coming over that prefer to be in an animal free environment for whatever reason.

IMO, everyone's entitled to like (or dislike) what they want. At my house, if you don't like my dogs, okay, they'll be in my bedroom and I won't be offended at all! :)
I agree. Just seems like being courteous to one's guest. :confused3

Firedancer = :stir:

I think simply the reasons allot of people do not like dogs is because of their owners.

Where I live here in the OC, the people dress their dogs up, push them in strollers and use baby slings/carriers to hold them. :headache:
Here, dogs are welcome in restaurants and malls. :headache:
I have been very confused by that...in MA, where I am from, dogs walk on their 4 legs, they are not pushed in carriages and strollers, they do not go into restaurants and malls.
I was in an OC restaurant the other day. We were sitting in the outside patio area. A woman all of sudden yells "we are in a restaurant, you know how to act"....I glanced over and she was talking to HER DOG! OMG. :headache:

That's me. :thumbsup2

I wouldn't do it either. I just don't get involved in situations that are between others and the law when I am not involved, that's all.

As far as animals being property I don't think mine is the only way of looking at it. It is merely my opinion and I impose it on no one. There are some who think an animal is property, some that think it is an equal part of the family, and probably just about everything in between. All are fine with me. I wouldn't tell anyone their view is wrong and expect the same courtesy.

You're certainly entitled to any opinion you wish to have in this wonderful democracy, but if everyone felt like you, the world would be doomed, IMO.

It's people standing up for what's right and wrong that give us the right to the freedoms we take advantage of every single day. Choosing to look the other way because it doesn't involve you is flat out wrong, IMO. Regardless of the subject at hand.

You might not have a problem with me driving 105 MPH and you might think it's only a situation that involves me and the police, but what about all the innocent people I might be endangering while I decide to indulge my fantasy? It's not your problem?

How many murderers would be still walking our streets if no one came forward to testify against them? I don't see life thru those colored shades that you're wearing. I would die however defending that right for you if I had to.

I once saw the sweetest little cat, but that cat couldn't meow (he was my BIL's cat btw). Turns out that some of BIL's sick *** friends decided to hang the cat by it's neck to see what it would do. BIL walked in and kicked them out of his house immediately. I wouldn't have stopped there, I'd have called the damn cops on them. He was one of the most loving cats I'd ever seen and some lunatics decided to get their jollies off, just because they could. It wasn't my business, it wasn't my cat, but I can assure you, if I had seen it, I wouldn't have stopped till they were held accountable to the fullest extent that the law allowed. No one has a right to do that to ANY living creature, even if they call it their property.

There are causes I am active in and other I don't care about. This is one of those I don't care about so I don't throw my hat in the ring, that's all. I'm sure there are things I find important that others don't.

Well, I'm sure this is true, so point conceded on this issue. I do hope for the safety of anyone on any stretch of highway that you'd pick your phone up and dial 911 if you see someone approaching 105 (I've never driven that fast btw).

Check this out though. I'll leave the thread on a funny note. It's a video and transcripts of a recent 911 call.

I'll be frankly honest, this probably would never be me, but if it were, I'd not be this upstanding. :lmao:

I never expect ANYone to love what I love, it's everyone's right! I feel that way about marriage and Disney but I can still deal with the DIS! :thumbsup2

I personally prefer animals to people ANYDAY. Someone asked me why and I told them over 30 years ago "because they NEVER say dumb things."

I'm the same way!

My son has terrible allergies. So any kind of animal is out of the question. But I love looking at them. I can't resist there cute little faces!

This reminds me of something that happened to me a few weeks ago. My cousin recommened her hair dresser to me, I called her up and she offered to come to my home. Not only did she show up with her daughter, she also showed up with her pitt bull puppy! What nerve! I mean, who does that? The dog stayed outside, I thought it was extremily disrespectful for that woman to assume I would allow her untrained puppy to roam around my home!!! Sometimes, I just dont get folks with animals, just because they love them, they assume everyone else will too!

That's disgusting! How could anyone do that to an animal?! :sad1:

Animals aren't property. They're living breathing creatures. They have parents, siblings, minds, feelings, etc just like humans do. I don't know why people don't think they deserve to be happy. :sad2:

I haven't driven that fast either other than on a race course. I will not only call 911 if I see someone approaching at 105 but I'll think the whole time "I'm doing this for N. Baily" ;)

Of course I would pull over before using the phone in traffic. While I am not one to dictate what others do I try to be as safe as possible when I can.

Did you listen to that 911 call? The woman was drunk and called 911 to report herself. :lmao:

I can't condone cruelty whether it's against humans or "property". Animals feel pain and can suffer and that to me is wrong and frankly I wonder about anyone that considers that OK. True property such as yards and cars can't suffer and that makes a big difference to me.

I do agree that everyone has the right to see things how they wish and that people should follow the law. But again pain and suffering will never make sense to me regardless of beliefs or laws.

Just my two cents.

I agree. People not liking animals I can understand, I guess. My same feelings about other peoples babies. Don't really want to be around em, don't really want to hear them, don't really want to hold em. But to accept abuse, torture, and the other horrible things that owners do their pets as the owners' right because they are chattel is very disturbing to me, kind of makes me wonder what kind of cold person thinks that way.
