I'm really behind technology in this department. What else does an IPOD do other than play music? How much do they cost?

It depends on what kind you want. You can expect to pay $69-$399 for one. The $399 one can play videos as well.

How much music do you want to put on one?

I want about 30-40 songs to keep on a play list when I go walking around the neigborhood. Do I need an IPOD or something else?

For only that many songs you can get another brand name MP3 flash memory based player. If you want to stick with the Ipod brand name, the shuffle will do for about $70, but you have no control over the order the songs play. The Nano holds more and you have controls over the songs, but starts at $150.

Other brand names start at much less for the same memory and better features; SanDisk make some nice ones, and so does Samsung.

LOL you'll get addicted after that and want more than a handful of songs. I thought the same thing until Matt bought me a 4GB IPOD Nano. I love it and have tons and tons of music on it. I take long road trips and I plug that baby in and don't have to worry about changing CDs or finding another station. My IPOD also stores pics(guess they are of ;) ) and has a clock and umm I don't even know what else, lol. I don't need the big big one that plays videos though it looks really cool. If you want to start out small look at the IPOD shuffle. It holds about a 100 songs and is under a $100.

They can play music, video, store photos.... they are a HARD DRIVE with specific software built in. LOTS you can do with them! I even have a bartending program on mine.

IPods are wonderful but if you only want a few songs I would go look at the selection at your local Best Buy or a similar store. That way you can find something that will be comfortable for you while you walk. You should be able to find something at a very affordable price.

My son bought his own Ipod. It is the U2 special edition 30 GB and holds over 7500 songs. At last count he had over 1500 songs on it. It wasnt cheap but at least I didnt pay for it.

Buy as large an Ipod as you can afford, as someone else said they are adictive. DD and I each have a 30 GB Ipod with video. I now wish I had spent a little more and got the 40 GB.
DD is going to be taking Spanish in high school. Last night at Office Depot I saw a learning Spanish program that can be loaded onto her Ipod.

We have 3 in our family! :sunny: A video, a pink mini, and a nano. LOVE those Ipods. You will find you want more than 30-40 songs I imagine. I use mine for walking and love the large variety I can choose from. Mine is 4 gb which seems great for my purpose. I don't have to plug it in to the computer and change songs like I would with another type that does not hold very much.

You will get addicted and the accessories are fun too! Since I walk and exercise with mine, I got an arm-strap that protects and holds it in place. DH has a plug in for his vehicle's stereo so he can listen to it in there (Best Buy put in a new stereo and cable for this). He also has a little portable speaker system for his that he uses in his office.

I am not sure when the new wave of Ipods will be out and what they will be like. It seems they replace them every year or even more often than that.

How does the music get in the IPOD then? Sorry, I'm IPOD challenged! :confused3

Ah, I was confused, but now understand. What she means is, that 4 Gig is more than enough for her, so that she isn't FREQUENTLY changing out her songs.

iPods are SUPER SIMPLE to use. With iTunes all you do is plug in the cables and the software does EVERYTHING ELSE ( at least if all you want is the basic stuff - you can do more if you choose ).

Have NO FEAR! :teeth:

::yes:: Yep, I've never deleted a song once I put it on there (through the computer of course!) If I could only have 30 songs I would have to swap them out weekly at a minimum!
