I honestly dont get it. I dont get the hype; he is GREAT his speaches, but that's all I see that's good about him honestly.

His health care plan actually scares me. The health care plan in Canada is a failure, why would we copy them? If I was having a having a heart attack and someone off the streets came in having one 5mins before me I will have to wait. I dont get why people want the government to have MORE control. I just dont see anything good with this plan at all. Unless your job is utter crap you wont benefit from this.

I mean are the troops not going to start coming back in January? We still have troops in Vietnam and Baghdad, why wouldnt we still have some in Iraq? I dont get this one at all. Why do people even bring up the war any more?

Obama (imo) is shady. I does have connections to terrorists (that came from CNN, not Fox so dont play that card). If McCain or Bush had connections like that Obama would pull that card every chance he got. I know I personally would not have voted Bush if he had those connections.

I just dont get his appeal. Why do people like him (serious question), please explain. So many people want change and Obama throws that word around so much that you think of "change" and you think "Obama". He's blinded people, imo.

P.S.- I'm not one of the crazy people that think he will destroy the country with terrorist attacks and become a dictator, lol. I simply dont understand him or why people worship him.

I would like this peaceful please, I dont like debates that get nasty.

You sound very misinformed. You are making a lot of assumptions that show you really don't know his plans or what he stands for. Whoever said his health care plan was going to be like Canada's and that the troops would come home in January? I suggest you read the candidates' websites, watch the last debate, read the newspaper, and watch the political talk shows

Then peacefully, as requested, I think you should listen to IDoDis.

Simply put....Obamas theme has been a call to action for everyone. A higher ideal for the national debate. He inspires people with his words, and though some may scoff at that. I would point to john kennedy, who asked people to serve, and his WORDS still resonate today.

Obama makes me feel at ease that when he is in the situation room, or at the negotiating table, there will be no one there smarter or more prepared, however he will not surround himself with yes men like the current president. Joe Biden is nobodys yes man, and judging from the primaries, they have clear differences.

Lastly I think our country will take a major leap forward historically if we send a message loud and clear that this young african american man witha funny name, can convince joe-six pack to put their faith in him

I hoped this helped

Although I'm not an Obama supporter, you're not very well informed. We hav no troops in Vietnam and Baghdad is in Iraq. Obama's position on Iraq troops has "evolved", during the primaries he was for withdrawing almost immediately.

His health plan does not immediately call for government control, the ultimate goal for Democrats in Congress is govt. controlled health care. This is just the first step. Medicare has been such a success more doctors every day drop out of Medicare.

My wife works at a place where the conversations frequently touch on politics. And not once person has been able to tell her why they support Obama or what qualifies him to be president. They usually start attacking McCain or hurl person insults at my wife.

At the time I write this I noticed the first 2 responders could not tell you why they support him.

I support Obama because I trust him to appoint smart people to the Surpreme Court, people who will, for one thing, respect a woman's right to choose.

I support him because I think he will put us in a better position to negotiate with other world leaders. I don't think most of world respects McCain and god forbid he dies because I can't imagine Palin winking at Putin, et al, and thinking that will work.

I support him because I trust him not to get our military involved in another war and I believe he has a better plan for getting us out of Iraq.

I support him because he's a better choice than McCain, who I think has sold out and now appears rather pitiful, as does Sarah Palin.

I support him because I think that he understands the needs of working class people more than McCain does.

And sooo many more reasons. Really, I can't wait until he's president!

I'm impressed with his management skills as exemplified in how he has run his campaign. He has consistently attempted to take the high road until he was absolutely forced to respond to the mudslinging - at which point he rose to the occasion.

I'm impressed with his leadership skills - he seems to be able to listen to other people with different points of view and is able to process the information and while he may not agree with the point of view of everyone he interacts with - at least seems to have taken their views into account.

I think that the time has come for America to value intelligence again in its leaders - he is undeniably intelligent.

He seems to believe there is a role for government in a time when those who say there is no role for government are being proven wrong.

And my favorite thing about him - he doesn't run around bragging about how he is a Maverick as if it was a good thing. I want someone who is able to say - "I thought this through very carefully and here is the reason behind what I am doing. I'm not interested in having a President with a "golden gut" - I don't trust people like that.

He is thoughtful and reasonable. He thinks things through and listens to others' points of view.

I'm not blinded by Obama. I had a tough time deciding between him and Hillary in the primaries. I wound up voting for him because of tiny differences between their platforms. I liked Obama's approach to foreign policy and health care better than Hillary's. I thought she would push universal health care too much and focus on it too much.

As for differences between Obama and McCain, those are much easier to see. I'm an issues voter; I don't vote for a candidate because one is better looking or does better at speeches (if that were the case, I'd have voted for Hillary; I frankly think she's a better speaker than Obama). Things like health care, Iraq, the environment, rights for gays, etc... I just agree more with Obama.

A helpful website to see where Obama stands on the issues (as well as the other candidates) is www.ontheissues.org.

I don't watch TV news for a very good reason--they're out for ratings. I prefer print media. If you're referring to Ayers as the terrorist Obama has links to, lots of Chicago politicians on both sides of the aisle have links to Ayers; it was just a result of doing political business there.

It is always amazing to see how despite how Canada's health plan is constantly ragged upon by Americans "frightened" of it - the actual life expectancy for Canada is longer than life expectancy in the U.S.

Thank you all for your HELPFUL posts. You actually answered the question; whether I was right or wrong about what I said. I asked for you to help me understand why you like him and you did, so thank you.

I will go back and look at the candidates health care plans (because of the posts above ONLY). I have followed the first 2 debates, watch CNN in the mornings and FOX at night and follow the campaign trails. Though on some subjects I am misinformed by jumping to conclusions I am current with what happens. What made me bring up this topic was I went to both candidates websites and understood what McCain was about while I was still confused by Obama.

Though I still get a bad feeling with Obama I now see why people like him. His speeches are by far better than McCain's he makes people feel safe and with him everything bad will change. That's why I'm not sure about him. He seems too good to be true, he almost dosnt seem real. Then you hear about his minister and how he has terrorist ties (the new one from this week). Then (from my knowledge) he dosnt truly deny it, he just goes on to attack McCain and shift the negativity to him (which he does quite nicely).

Something just sit right with me. Anyways, thank you though for your responses. I will look into both candidates health care plans further. I think the point of this thread has been reached and we can close it. (I dont like political threads open too long they tend to get nasty from my experiences.)

I dont think health care plans = life expediency rate. The average lifestyle of American's is disgusting.

I walk around my school and 6/10 people smell like an ash tray. 9 of my close neighbors smoke in the 5 houses around me. 1 is an alcoholic and Americans are very promiscuous. That is not saying Canada is perfect, but I think it's safe to say America is a sinful nation and it does make our lives shorter.

It has nothing to do with their health care plan.

(btw, the post above was posted when this thread was at post #10)

Just a note McCain has ties to a few very shady characters himself. Some would even say that they are much worse.

Well... If I must, here ya go --

Reason #1 -- I support Obama because he promotes inspiration and participation - Let there be no doubt, Obama is a great speaker. However, people who dismiss his speeches as just "pretty words" aren't paying close enough attention to what he's saying. His message calls for participation and service in the names of the larger civic and communal ideals that has been at the heart of America's history. His call for change is primarily about changing ourselves, and it resonates. It appeals to the best in us instead of the worst.

Reason # 2 -- Speaking as a teacher, Obama will work to help schools and teachers with the tools they need to educate all students. He understands that No Child Left Behind left the money behind, while setting unrealistic goals and providing little support to reach them. Obama understands that teachers and schools cannot close the achievement gap by themselves, and there needs to be a broader effort by government and society to support children’s health, welfare, and learning.

Unlike McCain, I don't believe that giving a tax credit or voucher for private schools will help our society. That system would be detrimental to our society as a whole because the public schools would be left with even less money while the wealthy who can pay for a private education would just line their wallets even further. The tax credit would only provide partial payment for the private school fees which means "most" Americans would still not be able to take advantage of it. Those who would benefit would be sending their children to private schools regardless of a voucher.

#3 -- I support Obama because I believe in his plans to revamp health insurance. I believe all children should have health coverage and that American families should have affordable coverage. Why continue to allow the insurance companies to make record profits at our expense?

#4 -- I support Obama because he understands the U.S. Constitution. As a constitution law professor, Obama would never support the absurd Patriot Act or appoint judges that would go against what our constitution stands for.

#5 -- I support Obama because he has a dynamic and moving forward energy plan. He recognizes that drilling is not an answer to our energy woes.

#6 -- I support Obama because he is highly intelligent. An intelligent person is more likely to understand his/her own shortcomings, more likely to seek out multiple points of view, and more likely to know and understand history. It’s been eight long years since a person of this level of intelligence has been POTUS.

I could go on, but I'm taking my kids to the movies. Again, my best advice to you is to research, read, and don't listen to the talking heads of Hannity and Limbaugh. Make your own decisions based on what you know and feel to be right.

The only ones complaining about the Canadian health care system are the Americans.

We still have troops in Vietnam and Baghdad, why wouldnt we still have some in Iraq?

I'm confused. Do you need a map? Baghdad is IN Iraq! :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

I dont get this one at all. Why do people even bring up the war any more?

People "bring up" the war because IT'S STILL GOING ON! News flash: troops are still being killed, innocent civilians are still being hurt, and billions are still being spent each month. Just because this election is dominating the news, doesn't mean we are finished in Iraq.
