Couch to Castaway Cay

How is the terrain of the 5k? After several turned ankles, I no longer run on uneven surfaces at all, especially with pebbles, etc. i run on my treadmill but walk outside. I would love to do the CC run but am nervous about the condition of the road. Any info? Thanks.

It's paved. It's the paved path, then the old runway where trams go, then the paved-for-pedestrians-and-bicyclists loop.

You can also walk it too.... or do a mix of walk and run. They have a clock, but no winners/losers. Everyone(ages 10 and up) gets a medal.

You have inspired me! I am going to try to copy your spreadsheet and get on the program! Cheering for you!

DH and I are 52 and obese (says the government, anyway; by their standards I am only about 4 pounds from "overweight"). We are doing this on the March 28 Dream cruise. We can't really run, not because we are old or overweight but because I have some breathing issues when I run--but we can walk, really, really fast, like a 16 minute mile! I wasn't even considering it but when DH and I started hitting the gym in January it became a goal for us.

even in the US Marines they couldn't get enough new people to make the weight requirement so what did they do they up the weight people can weigh. When I was in the most I could weigh was 154. Now they can weigh up to 170 pounds for my height.

Just to keep myself honest and make certain I don't let this self-challenge slide, here's an update:

My weight loss is almost exactly on schedule, at 2 pounds a week. This morning I weighed myself at 264.2, which is nine pounds below my starting weight of 273. I feel good that this is sustainable.

I missed a couple of my daily activity goals because I got really large, really painful heel blisters. I read around for advice. In the end, tightening my laces and waiting for the blisters to heal did the trick. I can feel when the friction against my heel begins and can adjust my shoes and socks appropriately.

I haven't yet begun to run; I'm just aggressively walking at the moment, sticking to the schedule I set for myself. I feel, though, that I'll be ready when the time comes.

See y'all at Castaway Cay.

I told my wife about this thread and now she wants to get ready to try this too. We're a few years older than you and spent the time since our last cruise trying to get a little more fit.

CONGRATULATIONS on MANY levels!!! Especially "keeping yourself honest!" WAY TO GO on keeping your schedule!! You're well on your way to Dec 2016! Cheers!

To all of you who think you can't do it, I'm proof that you can.

Using the C25K app on my phone, I was able to go from zero running to being able to 'run' (if you can call a 14 minute mile running) the entire CC course without stopping in about 4.5 months - and I'm a big guy in his 40's who has had 6 reconstructive knee operations (3 on each) from old sports injuries, and deals with arthritis and sore joints, every moment of every day.

Until hitting CC, I had never been able to go a full 5k without having to incorporate walking, but something about being out there with other people made me want to push myself to do it. It may sound hyperbolic, but crossing the finish line having run the whole way, ranks as one of the best moments of my life.

That's awesome! Keep it up.

You may have already been taught this trick, but in case you haven't try this simply shoe-lace technique (
). I have a pretty narrow heel so the back of my foot likes to slide around in my shoes but I can't just tighten the laces because that makes the shoe way too tight for the front of my foot. This heel-lock helps the heel not slide up and reduces that friction you've mentioned.

You can also try Body Glide. It is kind of like chapstick for you body. Just rub some on your heels or any other areas that tend to rub a lot. You should be able to find it at most running or sporting good stores. It's a life saver.

Hi OP! I am right along with you and wish you all of the best on your journey.

My tip is to make sure you also have strong core as you are working up to your running/jogging time and endurance. Squats and lunges help as well.

You can totally do it! Castaway Cay was my first 5k! It made me catch the running bug! I have since completed 2 Glass Slipper Challenges, an assortment of 5K to Half Marathons, and regularly run with my run club. Happy thoughts OP! You totally got this!

I don't know you, but I'm so proud of you for taking this first step towards your health!! Good Luck on your journey!! :cutie:

(PS Your first lines made me giggle )

Just Awesome!

I lost 60 LBS doing the Couch to 5k. Worked myself up to a half-marathon in 3 years!

But the Castaway Cay 5K to me blows all of the other races away.

1) you are now an international runner!
2) the best after race pics ever! (I have one of me and Pluto!)
3) event though there is a clock to time yourself there is only you who knows, no after race scores on the internet or in the local paper.

So this is a great achievement!

Remember this one race I ran I came in next to last and the best advice I got was "at least you showed up and got moving!"

I have taken clips, vids, you tube movies of the Fantasy and Dream and meshed them into a 30 minute montage so that when I'm on the treadmill I fell like I am running over all over the ship while at home.

So Enjoy the run, remember it for when you are home and have a blast!

I will be running on the CC 5K Dec 2 so I will think of you!

Congrats!

Joe

YOU GOT THIS!!! I never ran in my life until maybe November in order to start training for the Princess 5k in November-- I walked more than I thought I would but I didn't care I finished it! I am doing another 5k next weed and plans to the 5k Castaway Cay on our cruise next cruise!

Best wishes and remember, no matter how slow the pace, it means something to you that you are doing it!

So, I'm 50. And obese. And these are not good things to be both at the same time.
....................
If the goals I set seem ridiculously modest, keep in mind I've been out of shape for a couple of decades now, so I need to cautious in easing my way back into the whole exercise thing.

So if you're going to be on Castaway Cay in early December, come cheer me on. :)

Seen this on a commercial it goes something like this: "It doesn't matter how slow you go, you will always lap the person on the couch!"
It's very cool you set this as your goal.
Congrats and I wish you the best of luck; sounds like you are going at this the right way.
