Couch to 5k

Just finished w4d3 but boy was I slow. Calling what I was doing running is an insult to runners.

I'll try w5d1 on Monday since we will be @ Disneyland on Tuesday for the star tours preview. :thumbsup2

Good weekend wishes to all!
:hippie:

I did Week 6 Day 1 today on the treadmill at my hotel. I would have preferred to do it outside, but the hotel is in the middle of a office area with no sidewalks!

My feet, the tops, were very sore at first too and I think it was that I was running too fast, when I slowed down a little, they stopped hurting.

I finished the program this week. GRADUATED!!!! :woohoo: I am finding it hard to motivate myself now to keep going and my 5k is still 2 weeks away. Ticking off those days kept me going. I'm worried, DH's friend did a race last night on the same course and said the entire first half is pretty much all uphill. Even he, who is a runner almost had to walk some of it he said. Lovely.

My feet haven't hurt like this before even though I was still on the pace I had been on up to this point.
I bought new shoes and I hope that helps.

Congrats on Graduating!!!!
That stinks about the hills!!!

I've already decided to start C2-10K in preparations for the Princess 1/2.

Have fun at DL!!!! I'm jealous!

How did it go? I haven't attempted yet.
I might try it in a little bit or tomorrow morning before DH leaves.

Glad to see some familiar faces over here! Hi Buffy :wave2: I started c25k today! I'm gonna try to maybe do a 5k on Father's Day (June 18). I figure the worst is I walk the end of it and try another one. My long term goal is to do the Princess Half Marathon at the World in Feb 2012. The DisMoms have gotten me motivated to get my butt back in gear.

I've never really been a dedicated runner. In grad school (about 15 years ago) a bunch of my friends who were all runners convinced me to do a 5k with them. I said I would do it if someone would stay with me to make sure I didn't die along the course. Well at the start they were all much faster than me and we gone about a half mile or less into it. But I finished it and LIVED. After that I didn't do too much more running.

Today I did w1d1. It went pretty good. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Actually felt kinda good to get moving. The best part is my shin splints didn't act up and my bum knee isn't bothering me. So tomorrow I'm off to do w1d2.

Welcome to the C25K Club!!!!! Glad to see another familiar face here!!
I'm not even close to a runner period, let alone a dedicated runner. But the kids are so I need to do something they like to do.

Don't do day 2 tomorrow, you need a day of rest in between for your muscles to recover. It seems that most people I know are doing Monday, Wednesday, Friday. The other days you can cross train- walk, weights, etc.

W4D2, it sucked. I threw up midway through. I now just don't want to move. Ugh

Buffy, I took your advice and didn't do w1d2 today. I did do a 2 mile walk and felt good with that. I felt like I had to run just a little bit so I ran about 2 very short blocks. Well I wouldn't call it running, just a jog above walking pace. Tomorrow looks like rain so I will probably rest. If it is nice I will walk. My quads are pretty sore today and this morning when I woke up my shins were hurting. Ugh shin splints. :headache: I gotta find time to go get new shoes this week.

Colleen I have found that if I put roll on icy hot on my legs before I run, my shin splints don't hurt as bad.

KitKat, sorry! I hope you feel better!! I've felt that way before too.

It was fine. It's warm up/5 minutes jog/3 minute walk/8 minute jog/3 min walk/5 minute jog/cool down so I found it a lot easier than the 20 minute jog.

I will be getting me some of that tomorrow. I have gotten shin splints ever since my freshman year of high school when we started running inside in the school hallways and I was only wearing Tretorns.:sad2: Bad, bad idea! Back then I really thought I fractured something. Our trainer had a hard time convincing me it was only shin splints.

Stretch stretch stretch. I've found that my shin splints are ok when I run but man do they hurt when I go back to walking!!

I love the icy hot though. Opens up the nasal passages too! LOL

W6D3 today...I did it...I ran 25 minutes straight! I then drove it with my car and it was 2.1 miles! With the 10 minutes of walking, it was even more. I am so excited...I never thought I would be able to do this.

Whoo hoo! I am afraid of the 25 mins, but I was afraid of 20 mins too.

Good tip!
One of the stretches I use is stand on a stair step (or a curb) then go up on your toes and down, turn around and go down on your heels, this is hard to explain - your toes are on the edge of the step, and your ankles need to go down that step...then up You'll see lots of runners before a race working this type of stretch!

:cheer2: WTG! 2.1 MILES!! :woohoo: Thats amazing!!

I'm just starting Week 2.... I know I'm trying to push myself, that I am "running" from post to post - and then trying to "jog" the whole time - but mostly I walk... but I'm not at 2 miles!! I thought today I could go 2 miles, but I realized I'm pushing too hard, that I'm not at that even pace yet, and so I'm going to stay at 1.22 miles (the loop through the park!) and try and work on running straight through without walking!

So glad I found this thread!!! I just started today. Never been a runner, although I think I would like to be. I have a race in September I would love to do, it's an 8 mile race. I have NEVER run anythig in my life. So....I need to have a goal. I am running on the treadmill to start. It's pretty hilly where I live, and really not sure I am ready for that! Great to hear the feedback, successes, and struggles on this thread!

:cheer2: Good Luck!

I have NEVER been a runner either. But I dont like this "couch potato" person I've become - so having the goal of a race really does push me to get moving!

8 mile race in September is do-able - you can also check out the event/comp board here too - there are lots of knowledgable race people there!

You mean heel drops (that's what I call them)? I do those for my plantar fasciitis but my podiatrist said to be really careful when doing these stretches because you can stretch the fascia to far and cause damage.
I also do heel squats, where you put one foot flat and one out in front of you and roll the heel back on the forward foot and squat. that really helps stretch the calves and the shins out.

Welcome!!!! 8 miles is awesome!!! That's a little over a 10K, you can do it!!!
I've never been a runner either but all my kids are, so it's the new family thing to do. And DH wants to run an ultra marathon.

Tomorrow morning I am getting new running shoes and then I will be off to do w1d2! I got the C25K app for my phone so that will help so I don't have to keep looking at my watch.
