Costumes; all out, somewhere in the middle, or play it down?

...I don't want to be the only adult in costume at 3 pm.

Don't worry, you won't be! We enter early every year and have yet to be the only grown ups in costume!
But you might want to play it by ear and layer your costume. The weather can still be quite warm in the afternoons, and you might find your full costume to be too much at 3 pm. If so, just wear part of it/enough of it, and put the rest in a locker until later when the sun starts going down.

The plan is to go as Joy this year ( if I can just get started on the dress and everything else!!). I figure it's versatile enough to be breezy for the party start but also layer with a yellow cardigan in the evening. Plus, hopefully lots of cute photos to take in DCA pre party
Also, while I want it to be relatively casual (can yellow tights, yellow dress and blue wig really be casual?), I'm hoping to include little elements like having a plastic yellow orb, maybe with a photo inside.
My SO still doesn't know who he's going as. He has a goatee which he needs to match with a character. Everything I've suggested has been met with "but I'd have to shave" which is nonsense cause I don't care and I'm sure no one else will... Oh well

Has he looked at character hats, like on etsy.com? Like the kind of cosplay hats that have the character's face on the hat? Then everyone will know who he is and the goatee won't matter at all. I do this for DH often -- he chooses a character, I find a hat, he doesn't have to wear makeup or alter his face in any way, and everyone knows who he's supposed to be. Win win for all! And the rest of the outfit is easy -- just match a t-shirt and pants to the character's main colors.

How about King Fergus from Brave? Or Jafar? Or Flynn Rider? He has the chin without the accompanying mustache. (I cheated and googled Disney characters with goatees.)

Discussed at length. Jaguar maybe but dismissed for same reason as Doctor Strange (which was a strong contender), no capes at the party =[

I'll mention it but he's mostly just being difficult and indecisive. I think he's the type that needs to go all out or not bother at all annoyingly. He was almost tempted to redo Flint Lockwood but "that's not Disney" nevermind that it doesn't matter if it's not Disney!! Gah!
I'll end up just buying stuff for a casual Fear from Inside Out and he'll just have to stick!

Adults can have capes, they just have to be no longer than waist level (which I does diminish the effect of course but its an option).

How about Killian Jones (Hook) from Once Upon a Time?

Haha, when I mentioned the waist level cape the first time, he made a face.
Neither of us have watched OUAT yet but I know that character is bagsied by a mate in terms of costumes. If I could just find a Winter Soldier sleeve or decent looking tee, first choice would be casual Bucky from Civil War but no luck on eBay/ Amazon etc

It's go big or go home for us! We handmade all of our costumes starting at the beginning of the summer and I still have some finishing touches to add to them (which I need t hurry up and finish, we have about 2 weeks left haha). At least 10 hours on each of them (x 4, one was already made) over several weekends.

The first years we didn't dress up, but it's way too much fun not to now. We make sure to buy an extra suitcase on the plane just for our costumes lol

Please post photos when everything is finished! I'm so curious!

We are basically Disney bounding the Guardians of the Galaxy. My Husband is going as Rocket Racoon, my son is going as Starlord, I am going as Gamora, and my daughter is going as Groot.

I guess what I am planning this year would be mostly considered Disneybound - Rescue Ranger Chip. I got a shirt from Etsy which got the upper half of the costume printed on including leather jacket and all that, and I have a hat to match. I wore it last year in WDW and it seemed to work pretty well, people kept singing the Rescue Rangers theme song to me. :D

The year before in Anaheim I was Pikachu. I had been a little worried because the costume was relatively simple, and I am used to some people in Anaheim really going all out. I had yellow leggings, a hat with the Pikachu ears and his face and a yellow shirt where I had drawn the tail on the back.

All my worries went "poof" when we left the restroom after we left the restroom where we had changed. A little girl spotted me, started tugging at her mom's sleeve and excitedly yelled "Mommy, mommy, look! Pikachu!!" :D That was a recurring theme that evening then, my friends were laughing their heads off. I had CMs pretending to throw Pokeballs at me - even two characters reacted.

We are going to the first party, Sept 19, which is International Talk Like a Pirate Day...so we are going as pirates! I am excited because both my BF and DS are into it - usually I am really dressed up and they are not at all. I can't wait to see all the wonderful costumes!

We've gone all out in the past, but this year we're doing more of a bounding style as Pooh, Tigger Eeyore, and Piglet. I can't wait

So we're technically cheating. A few years ago my SO and I went to a Halloween Party as Wreck It Ralph & Vanellope von Schweetz. However, SO is not wanting to wear the overalls, so I'm ordering a character shirt for him. I am actually upgrading a few things, since I made all the hair decorations from things I found last minute in the Xmas aisle at an Arts & Crafts store (one was a cupcake). But since the costume is a hoodie, some leggings and a little skirt, it's not too difficult to comfortable...unless it's super hot. But we're going on Halloween, so I figure the later, the better chance of cooler weather.

One guy was dressed as a fast food worker with an apron and hat but the restaurant if you knew was the chicken place from Breaking Bad.
One year our son was flight suit Maverick and my husband was leather jacket maverick and they even had matching aviators. While my daughter was Briar Rose (aurora hiding out as a non princess) when she met prince Philip, who was my older son. : )

One year I was Carmen San Diego and my grown son was Waldo and darn it we were hard to find!
