Cost of groceries in DVC resort shops?

We've had Garden Grocer delivery the past 4-5 trips, but I'm thinking of skipping that this time and just getting some things from the resort shop because we always spend much more than we need. I know the shops are expensive, but Garden Grocer isn't cheap either (45 cents/banana!), plus the delivery fee and tip. I might just pack a box of cereal and some snacks in our bags (we need gluten free for my daughter, so Garden Grocer isn't always that helpful for us with snack stuff). Water is the biggest thing that might make me want to keep Garden Grocer, but I'm curious the price difference for that and other basics like milk and bananas, maybe butter and cream cheese. Does anyone remember approximate prices for some of the basics in the resort shops like BLT or BCV and/or is there a price list available? Thanks in advance!

DVC has a grocery list that you can order from on their website. You can print off the list and look it over and check out the prices. If you want you can place an order and they can deliver to the room for a fee.

Go DVC website, look under plan my vacation. "grocery list-request form" then click on the resort you will be staying at.

As for as water, take a brita filter. It's alot cheaper or I believe they now sell water by the gallon (not positive would have to look at the order form).

We've had a mixed experience with groceries in the resorts. We always felt that things at BWV were way overpriced. At OKW, we thought moderately overpriced and recently at AKV-Jambo we thought decent.

I don't know if that's because those prices haven't moved much in the past few years (haven't stayed at BWV since 2007), if our "price point" has moved as our lifestyle has shifted some, or if other pricing is catching up? It may also be that we weren't looking a perishable items at AKV - just things like microwaveable meals as we were in a studio.

It is certainly more expensive at the resort though. I remember having to buy supplemental baby formula during our trip in 2007. OMG - could have purchased DVC for what we paid for that.

Not sure how GG works, but there's also wegoshop...don't they go wherever you need them to go? (so the gluten-free stuff could be purchased at Whole Foods, etc)

Anyway, the prices in the stores at OKW and AKL were basically twice what they cost at Publix. Eggs, butter, english muffins, even the packs of paper coffee cups. It adds up! We were glad we had a rental car, that's for sure (for more reasons than groceries of course).

They are pretty much the same, very expensive. It really depends on how much you are getting. On short trips with friends where we did not buy alot, we just bought in the resort store. On longer trips, we will make a grocery stop (I always rent a car).

The grocery list on the member site is a bit misleading in that the sizes are often smaller than you would get at the grocery story. I remember the butter and bacon were very small packages. Depending on the length of your trip, this may not be a problem. It is convenient if they have what you are looking for.

The last time we bought groceries at the SSR store was when we decided it was sooo much more cost effective to order groceries from Garden Grocer. I will never forget. I brought a pack of pre-sliced bagels & individual cereals WITH us in our suitcase and we spent just over $40 for some teeny tiny packs of butter & cream cheese, a liter of water & 1/2 gal. of milk, 2 16 oz bottles of diet coke and 3 bottles of beer. At least with GG I can get a whole CASE of water & I can go ahead & get the bagels & cereals delivered for the same cost. AND once we hit $40 we can order a case of beer too. Sure beats paying $6 each for them!!!

Wegoshop is always my choice. We drive down and still use them because they go to whatever store I need them to go to, they are always friendly and they even called early last time to see if it was ok to go ahead and deliver. Love getting the store receipt and the convenience is worth it for me. I used to spend several hours shopping and getting the stuff back to the villa and sorted out. Now we get it delivered and take about 20 minutes or so to get it put away. More time for relaxing or hitting the parks! Good luck deciding what to do!!

I would also vote for the Brita filter and packing most of what you need. Instead of bagels, etc for breakfast we do poptarts! Also, I don't think milk prices are bad, and chips, etc. are about the same, so for us it wouldn't offset any tip/delivery expense

Also, I would think you would tend to overbuy if you had to order in advance, instead of being able to run by the store for a second carton of milk or whatever you needed mid-way through your trip. Our family has made the mistake of getting too many sandwich "fixings" when buying groceries at the beginning of a trip, then had to leave (if unopened), or throw out, meat and cheese, for example

Hope that's true! What I don't understand is the price difference from resort to resort. I was comparing the different resorts' grocery lists on the member website last night. At some stores pop tarts are $3.95 and at others they are $5.95. Makes no sense.

We pack the poptarts! I rarely eat them except on vacation, so there is a very positive connection to them and happy times.

Depending on how much stuff you want to buy - don't pass up at least looking at the cost of renting a car from alamo/national for 1 day and going to the store yourself. Sometimes you can get a car for $25-$40.

To be honest we use GG more for alcohol than food. We do get quite a bit of food while were at it, but usually breakfast stuff, snacks, pop and water.

Without alcohol most likely would just get stuff at the resort store-it wasnt outrageous last time we looked, but $6 a bottle beer is.

In my opinion, besides the cost the biggest disadvantage to the stores at the resorts is the lack of variety and larger sizes. I want to buy a case of water, not individual bottles. So we are going to try WeGoShop this time. I am having them go to Wal-Mart. So I have decided to have them pick up some of my heavier toiletries too, like lotion and hair spray. We can then go without a checked bag. This will save me at least $50 in luggage fees. That's less than the delivery fee.

Just got back from Kidani and I was shocked to see that I could get some decent wine for under $20-a decent selelction of African wines for around the $14-20 price range. We brought a bottle with us expecting it to be outrageous but it was a nice suprise. But that is special to AKV because of the African connection. I don't remember the wine at OKW being reasonable at all.
