Cost of getting a will done?

Has anyone had a simple will done? Wondering what the approximate cost is?

We just had ours done a few months ago. We had will, POA, & Health care proxy. It was $300 each for DH & I. I am sure it all depends on where you live too. We live on LI.

If you live near a University with a law school most schools offer legal clinics once or twice a year and simple wills are one of the services that they offer.

If not there is free software available as well.

Also - make sure you have a living will - and end of life medical directives in place. PLEASE make those decisions for yourself so it isn't left up to your family to make the decision that no one would EVER want to make for someone else.

Our employee assistance plan will pay for a simple will done by a lawyer they refer you to. If you want to add the power of attorney, living will, etc you have to pay for that.

This depends on the going rate in your area and/or which lawyer you consult as well as how complicated your affairs are. What you think of as a simple will may very well not be.

Software does not take into account your state's laws and cannot provide the advice a lawyer can. When there are children involved, when there are remarriages, many other factors come into play in estate planning.

I practice trusts and estates in nyc (we have a long island office) and it is very dependent on your personal financial situation, the way your property is titled, family situation and expected future needs.

in the law office where i used to work, a simple will was about $50.00. as it becomes more complicated, it also becomes more expensive. as a PP mentioned, i would also suggest a power of attorney and/or living will.

That must be a typo or years and years ago. Even the lawyers in our tiny little town charged more than that 25+ years ago. I won't tell you what the big city firms charge now.

We used Legalzoom.com. It was very affordable and the directions were simple. We have a simple estate so no problem.

OP, if you have young children, you also need to name someone who is willing and able to act as their guardian until they reach the age of majority.

that was about 11 years ago and yes, i live in a small city, which is the county seat, and there is a GLUT of lawyers here. as i said, it was a charge for a SIMPLE will. i'm sure it's much more now.

My Dh and I just write one up ourselves and had it notarized at the bank. I was told it is just as good as anything else and was free.....
