Cost of braces

I don't mean to highjack this thread, but I have a question -

My son just got his braces in June. Total of $5000. My insurance pays $1500 but not all at one time. They pay me a certain percentage of the $1500 quartely for the duration of the treatment. So, that left me having to pay $1200 down out of pocket and $156 per month. I hear that most plans pay you upfront once a treatment plan is submitted. I am really upset that mine is stretching this out over two years. Does anyone else have this problem?

My DH is military and that is basically what they did for us as well. They pay a portion every month until the 1500 is used up. We had to put quite a bit down as well.

The first orthrodontist I saw for my 13 year old son was going to cost $6500.00, That did not include his retainers afterwards or teeth extractions. Had to have $2000 down and $300 monthly.

The second Dr. we seen, told me he doesn't believe in pulling healthy teeth out. So my DS has to wear an appliance in his mouth (Can't remember the name, HELP!) that pushes his teeth back and makes spaces to align his teeth. He wears this for 6 months and then gets his braces. Total cost with pre-appliance and retainers was $3720.00 with a $600 down payment and $150 a month!

The second opinion was what we went with. much more affordable!!!!

Our DS(14) has braces on now. We paid $4900, insurance didn't cover any of it. We seriously questioned whether he needed braces (we knew our younger son would need them and didn't want 2 in braces at the same time). Had 2 dentists tell us yes and the orthodontist showed us his mold and explained why. Well here we are 1 year later and they are coming off. I got a call from the office last week saying, "Oh, DS is getting his braces off early and your payment plan won't be paid in full. We will need $2500 when you come in" :scared1:

DS did not have to have a pallette expander. He did have a couple teeth extracted and he will have a retainer.

For DS and DD round 1 our insurance did a pre-treatment estimate and paid the orthodontist an upfront figure and a monthly payment. Each month our insurance sent along a statement of benefits paid.

I am hoping for the same process for DD round 2!

I cannot belive how many people are putting their kids through dental work to get prepared for braces at such a young age. This is not necessary. Do people not realize that until most of your permanent adult teeth are in, that your mouth continues to grow along with your teeth?

My son, now age 17, had a horribly crowded mouth as a child ... his teeth almost looked like he had two rows on top and bottom. He went to a children's clinic where I questioned his need for braces. I was told that his mouth will grow along with his body and it is extremely rare, except in cases of congenital abnormalities (cleft palate, etc.) that any extenders would be needed. Sure enough, as his baby teeth fell out and was replaced by more permanent teeth, they all aligned perfectly and he never needed braces! I sure am glad I never insisted on braces! :cool2:

Has anyone had experience with the pendulum appliance? My son has to wear this for 6 months before getting his braces. The alternative is the head gear....

Thank you

DS8 in braces since July 2008.
DD7, DD7 getting them TOMORROW.
Another DD7 is being delayed until year end, or maybe we'll wait until after WDW in Dec.
4th DD7 may get lucky. She still has a mouthful of baby teeth and her mouth/palate are shaped much differently.

So, to help with the math- that's 3 kids in braces now, another at the end of the year. Yes, this is ONLY "Phase 1".

DS is paid off this month but will continue treatment for the next 3 - 6 months, depending on how a couple of teeth come in now that they have room. Next 2 DDs payments start when treatment begins.

DS and one DD have a crossbite, thus the need for treatment at young age.
Another DD has an ectopic molar (it's stuck on the root of the one in front of it).

3rd DD has many things going on, including some asymmetry. We are putting off her treatment to ease the financial burden, but docs would rather start NOW (go figure :rolleyes1).

Total for each is just under $3500. We have $1500 ortho max per person. Our OOP is about $1600 after family discount and insurance. We got a larger discount than normal- wasn't that nice???? They are also working with us on payments. We could keep our monthy payment the same and just pay longer, even if they are finished with treatment.

FWIW- we are in a fairly affluent area and the orthos KNOW their markets. BUT my dentist said when she first saw my kids at age 3 that she expected them to all end up in braces.

For my DS, we did get 3 consults- all complimentary. All agreed on need for treatment, yet all had a different approach. We REALLY should have taken the time for 2nd opinions on the girls- it's not like us to NOT do so.

The 3 approaches for him were:
1. Palate expander and hope for no extractions.
2. Extractions and no palate expander. (This guy was more affordable, yet more "old school" and less into more innovative treatments. Also less kid friendly).
3. No palate expander and no extractions. This office does those as a last resort, although I do know some kids in treatment with them who do have those appliances.

Pricing for the most part among the 3 was similar.

So, 4 kids in braces by the end of the year AND taking once in a lifetime trip to WDW in December. No new kitchen/master suite or tummy tuck for me in the near future.

I have to say our ortho office is great. One of the docs called last night from his home to see if we had questions, etc before starting treatment. They did this for DS as well. They offer annual patient parties (yes, I know we are paying for this). Next week we are seeing G-Force with several hundred other "metal mouths". Last was HSM3 on opening weekend. DH took DS and was quite impressed when no less than 3 ortho employees knew DS by name. This is a HUGE practice with 2 locations, yet they knew who he was. Two full theatres of kids in braces and they knew MY son's name and he had only been in treatment for a couple of months.

They also offer incentives for good brushing. Kids earn points and can turn them in for gift cards.

DS 14 just got her braces off after four years. She had a cross bite so they recommended she start phase 1 in fourth grade with a palate expander. She got a little bit of a break between phase 1 and 2, but had to have 7 baby teeth removed in between. Phase 2 just ended and she is all set to start high school in the fall with gorgeous teeth.

Our total cast was $7,000 for both phases plus we had to pay to have seven teeth removed(around $700). We have no insurance to cover ortho or dental work so it was all out of pocket.

Around $5000 is the average.
Makes me very glad that DH's very good friend is an orthodontist. Won't be free by any stretch, but a big discount at least.

You may want to check if there is a dental school in your area. A friend of mine daughter got her braces done through a university dental school orthodontics. Her daughter's teeth turned out beautiful. The cost was about $2,000 less through the dental school, than the lowest consultation estimate she received through private orthodontists.

dd isnt in a palate expander per say but a distal jet appliance- its in place of the head gear that the other ortho wanted her to be in.. so far so good. her teeth are looking awesome..:thumbsup2

My daughter (almost 13 years old) has had a space maintainer on the bottom for the last two years. That cost me about $1500.

Now we are getting ready for braces, starting sometime this fall. The estimate that the orthdontist gave me is for $6300. :scared1: That will include everything from the initial impressions, all the office visits, all the braces and retainers and follow-up for 2 years after it is all finished. And we have no dental insurance. :scared1::scared1:

Obviously this will vary depending on your area and the exact amount of work that your child will need.
