can anyone discuss cosmetology school with me? I have a dd interested....she's a jr in college getting another degree, I'm trying to convince her to finish it first. She wants to go part time at the college & go full time to Aveda. I'm not sure if it's necessary to graduate from there - can't she get her license in a lot of other places much cheaper? She toured the school & naturally loved it but I'm not so sure - I thought you got your license & then went there for extra training - maybe I'm just clueless. Anything I should know about pursing this would be great.

My former SIL completed the Aveda cosmetology program in our area. She started without having her license. She took her exam after graduating from the program. (This could have just been due to timing.) She struggled with finding a job after graduation. I believe she only wanted to work in high end salons. She ended up working overnights in a bakery.

I still go to the Aveda Institute for haircuts because the prices are so reasonable and I like that I can be a small part of helping people learn. From my observations about 1/3 of the students already have their licenses and are employed at places like Sports Cuts part time while enrolled. The program is based on hours in the salon and students frequently take leaves of absence.

Would going to college part-time affect any student loans? Way back in the dark ages, you only had 6 months to not be enrolled full time before loan repayment began.

I suggest you get your next haircut or treat yourself to a manicure at the Aveda your daughter is considering to get a feel for the place. (Have a cup of the comfort tea--it's delicious.)

Aveda is a great school, but it’s definitely pricey. Your DD can get her cosmetology license at many other accredited schools for less. It’s often about the state requirements for hours and passing the state board exam. Once licensed, she can always do advanced training at Aveda later. Balancing both could be tough, so finishing her current degree might be a good idea.
thanks

thanks for your response. the good news is she doesn't currently have any school loans. That is a good idea to go there for services myself...I'm 4hours away but I was just up there a couple weeks ago - ugh

Yeah mine wants to work in high end salons of course too - but her real passion is wedding hair/makeup which doesn't even require licensure.

that's what I was thinking as long as the school is accredited then there's no reason to spend a crazy amount of money right now. I'm in the argument phase right now of trying to convince her to finish her other degree. Ugh
