Corroded Batteries in Toy ?

Does anyone know how to clean up the mess from leaking batteries? It isn't liquid anymore. The toy won't work with new batteries and I assume it's because the contacts are covered in dried on battery gunk. I've chipped off all I can with a screwdriver, but I can't get it all off. Can I use lemon juice or something?

Mixture of a tiny bit of baking soda and water to make a paste.. You can also use an emery board to sand the gunk off the contact points..

Been there - done that..

Make sure you neutralize as much of the battery acid as possible or it will just eat into the battery contacts again. I've had mixed results sanding off the battery contacts. You may want to apply some WD-40 or other light oil on the contacts after you clean them. That might prevent further oxidation.

So, I should still use the baking soda and water mixture to neutralize the acid residue? Then put a thin coat of vaseline on the metal contacts? I don't think we have any WD-40 right now.
