Corona Virus scare on cruise ship in Italy

So the asymptomatic transmission came from a case in Germany that was not vetted by the press. It was later determined that she was taking fever reducing meds at the time she got everyone else sick. So yes, the temp checks are not the best method, but are better than nothing. The best way to keep sick and exposed folks off the ships is for the Lines to allow cancelling without penalty for potentially exposed passengers, in concert with the other screenings that are occurring both privately and through the government.

exactly right...the man who brought the coronavirus onto the diamond princess was already coughing before embarkation day.
He embarked on his cruise coughing. Five days later, when the ship arrived in hong kong (for a port visit), he got off and never got back on.
He had gone to the hospital as by then he was feeling really sick, though he never went to the ship's medical center.

I put this in another thread as well. But basically there are currently more cases in Singapore, Thailand, Japan and S Korean than in many Chinese cities and Macau or Honk Kong, but yet there are not taking any precautions for these places. Thousands of Americans fly for work or holidays to these destinations....
Also Australia has 14 cases

I think some of the specific concern that led to them including all China and Hong Kong in more robust precautions is that officials do not trust China’s numbers and estimate the infection rate to be much higher and more widespread than reported. There’s a level of uncertainty and mistrust not present in some of the other countries.

I think another good perspective when it comes to raw numbers (and people comparing to the flu or Noro) is that based on the first reporting in 6-8 weeks we went from a brand new virus to 25k+ infected. That’s a truly incredible infection rate for a new germ and the growth must be higher than the “doubling every 6 days” to get numbers like that. It’s hard to say where this stops if the growth rate continues on its current path a few more weeks. The number of people receiving serious medical intervention is also substantial so if it grows and 20% of cases require intense 2 week hospital care cities are going to start really struggling (my own major metro with one of the highest hospital rates per capita would struggle if 10k people needed beds for a week).

the near exponential growth is shocking...
we're already way past SARS in terms of the number of infected, though with a seemingly lower death rate.

I wouldn't want to be in an inside stateroom. Locked two weeks in a room without windows? No thanks!

This is certainly giving me pause. I didn't mind an inside stateroom at all on any of my cruises, because I was rarely in it except to sleep. But to be stuck there all day 24/7? That has to be challenging. They are literally being locked up, like they are in prisoner cells & they are dependent upon the crew to have food & water delivered.

Thank goodness they have gotten free wifi & they added extra channels to the TVs - and the two weeks must seem like a very very very long time. Then again - if I were guaranteed not to get it - that is what would keep me going.

This may make me pay an extra to get a veranda in the future!

My next cruise is a 3 nighter in May - hopefully, this will all have died down by then - I do feel so sorry for those folks stuck in this situation.

Same as you I thought the magical window was a cute idea. But thinking about the lack of natural light for two weeks... It would kill your body clock!

Ok, but you aren't getting into the US without being asked those questions, at all. Do you have a cruise coming up? I do in 20 something days now. I am as concerned about embarking on that ship now, as I was 6 months ago, what with all of the gross *** people who don't wash their hands and pick both ends of their body, But getting on an American based ship is more likely to carry a risk of exposure to influenza or Noro than Wuhan. Now, maybe we find some things out in the future that make me change my mind. For now, this is controlled in the States and Disney sails out of the US. I would be more concerned if I were embarking from Vancouver, since Canada refuses travel bans (at least they were yesterday, this is evolving), but no ships are currently sailing out of Canada.

And as an aside, I'm not surprised at all that open circuit cruises with few security controls, sailing in the affected region, to ports that refused to enact any restrictions or screening when this thing dropped, are the ones with quarantines right now. DCL and others enacted their bans pretty quickly. Disney isn't taking chances.

Unfortunately the third UK case has been contracted in another Asian country that it's not China. The article now says how they will have to start asking people if they have been anywhere near the affected region!!
