Cori check

Boss just got notice from town hall that we all need to have Cori checks done. What exactly shows up on it? And what can they fire us for?

Do you have a criminal record, Barb? That's what shows up on a Cori Check. I don't know what they can fire you for.

If you don't have a criminal record, I don't think you need to worry about it.

any Criminal Conviction or Pending Court data should show up.

As for what they can fire you for -- if you are Employed at Will anything they want. If you did have a convictin and lied on your employment app about it, that would be bad.

If there was anything on there that showed you to be a risk to children, that would be bad.

If you haven't done anything, you have nothing to worry about.


I've had three background checks done in three different states.... (I work with children!)


Nothing ever showed up. (Not that I was expecting to, but you always want to wonder about that ticket I got in 1989!)

but how do they have anything to do with working w/children as long as I dont drive them?

I was really only kidding about tickets... thats a separate record all together. Thats the DMV record.


These background checks are really for anyone in close contact with children. I've had to get them done for various reasons and none of them have to do with driving. I've had them done for volunteer work, teaching, working in a daycare setting, and now working with middle schoolers.


I'm glad to hear that the library is being proactive in this case. For example, in our church everyone who is in the childrens ministry has to do a background check. Everyone from the nursery workers changing diapers to the teens, has to get it donw. Its not that they don't trust members of the children's staff, but it is for protection for the parents, church, and others.

Really a background check is nothing to be worried about. Are you getting fingerprinted? I've had two fingerprintings, and also two or three Childlines as well... Childlines are the reporting authority for abusive adults. If you abused a child, it will show up on a Childline.

I just had it done again for the second time in less than a year , the first time because I volunteered for my kids schools, the second time because I applied for a cafeteria job , in both cases everything came up clear. I'm glad that they are enforcing this policy, these are the people I trust my children to on a daily basis and anything that will protect the children, I will support.
In this day and age where there are so many criminals out there, I'm glad these kind of records are starting to be made mandatory.
Like someone else said before, if you have no records, then there's nothing to worry about.

Massachusetts state law requires all employees in a school and all who volunteer in a school have CORI checks. I had to mail CORI forms to our parents and have them return one if they planned on volunteering in the school in any capacity.

We have a list of offenses that are considered grounds for dismissal. I have received DUI reports on parents who have had a CORI checks.

Really, I woudl sort of expect a DUI or a vehicular manslaughter on a CORI.

My tickets were puny (failure to stop, and a speeding) back in 1989, so I have no idea why they weren't there. Either it was an age thing (more than 10 years), or it was a "non dangerous" offense.

I wasn't really worried... after all it happened a LONG time ago., and it could be easily explained if it did come up during the course of employment.
