My friend and I are taking our Dad's to POR as a gift and we are on the dining plan. We have 2 of 3 dinners picked for November, but are on the fence for the third between Coral Reef and Teppenyaki. All but one of us have been to a Teppenyaki style restaurant, but only one of us has been to Coral Reef. Any opinion's?

I would vote for Teppanyaki, but I don't like seafood, so keep that in mind as my reasoning. We enjoyed Teppanyaki - got the steak/chicken combo and it was really yummy.

I would vote for Coral Reef, not many places that you can eat inside a fish tank, plus the food is pretty good. Any decent size city has a Teppenyaki style restaurant.

I hate all seafood and my vote is for Coral Reef. I had one of the best steaks there that I've ever had. My appetizer was just a salad because the other choices had seafood in them, but I was able to get it with an entire grilled chicken breast on top and the add-on was included on the DDP.

The Chocolate Wave dessert is like a little piece of heaven.

Coral Reef gets consistently bad reviews for their food, although I have never eaten there.

Teppanyaki is the worst Japanese steak house I have visited, and I've been to a lot. It's highly overrated.

I suggest that you look into some other choices.

I would suggest Coral Reef as Tep has a limited memu for those on the DP.

I'm really confused about this...when I made my reservations yesterday, I specifically asked the lady who took my call what the menu restrictions were @ Tep for DP folks, and she said there were none at either restaurant. Definitely not questioning you knowledge here, but would love to know where I can read these restrictions so I can call and ask them to confirm or deny the accuracy. Thanks.

I just can't find the idea of eating fish inside an aquarium appealing. In fact, I find it vulgar, but that's me.

Teppanyaki isn't as good as most other hibachi-sytle japanese steakhouses, but I eat at one at least once a month, so if you don't go as often as I do, you might not notice a difference.

I was under the impression that the only thing limited on the DDP was lobster at Teppenyaki. Have there been other changes?

We have eaten at both places more than once and I would rather eat at Teppanyaki than Coral Reef.

my best friend just came back last week she had the dining plan and she loves food. she said the only place they didnt like was coral reef

Not from what I've seen. Just about all the recent reviews (2006) that are posted here are very favorable.

I don't think CR is a good value for the money if you're paying OOP, but that's only because I don't think ANY restaurant is worth $50/person for a dinner!

As for food quality, I thought it was excellent and I've seen countless other reviews which seem to mirror my opinion. As far as DDP value goes, I think this restaurant is one of the top choices. In fact, it was considered a 2 credit Signature restaurant until this year. Comparing my experience to older photos I've seen people post, it seems like portion sizes increased dramatically once it was "downgraded" to 1 TC. A few of the more expensive menu items were eliminated, but I prefer simpler foods anyway, so I like it much better the way it is now.

I've never been to Coral Reef (going this upcoming trip though) but have been to Teppanyaki and love it.

It really depends on what they like, check out the menues on both and see if they appeal to them. They are two completely different style restaurants too, one you will be seating with other folks and the other you will have your own table.

PS, regarding the restrictions on Teppanyaki, I believe they just changed their menu that if you want Lobster, it's an add on. You can check the menues there too.
