Copyright / T-shirt Design HELP!

This is the first time I've designed a family T-shirt for our vacation, so I apologize if I'm asking silly questions. I had thought that I could have the design professionally printed since I'm doing this for personal use and not reselling. I hadn't really realized that the printer themselves would have copyright issues since they are selling the shirt to me.

So, I'm left with doing my own iron-on transfer I suppose, but I wanted to get some thoughts on whether I would have any trouble wearing the shirt in the park even if I make it/iron it own myself? I don't want to do anything that would cause us to get flagged in the park or anything. We are going to the Mickey's NSSHP in October and I wanted a special shirt for the family to wear for that day. Does anyone think I'll have issues with this if I print the shirts myself? Does anyone know of someone being questioned about a shirt design?

I don't have enough posts to insert a link, but the design is located here:

Thanks!
Casey

the problem with getting them professionally made is that they are making money, that is why they wont do it. you can do it and the iron on ones come out really good

So if I do that, you don't think we'll run into any trouble in the park? I heard of one instance (only one though :) ) where a group was asked to change their shirts or leave the park due to a copyright image problem. I don't know whether they were actually professionally printed or done at home, but I don't want to have the problem either way! So you think personal iron-on design will be ok?
Thanks!

only reason i could think was if they were offensive. all the people on this board make their own and wear them without issue

Hundreds and perhaps thousands of DISigns are worn in the parks with no problem.

It is important to note that we do DISigns anticipating that the DISer making the request is going to make whatever we DISign themselves.

Anyone who prints and charges any money for anything with Disney images is violating copyrights. (places like Zazzle must have deals with Disney since they do this regularly)

I really don't see how people are getting away with charging for doing shirts, autograph books or anything else.

We've made family shirts last two trips, first with character images on front and Mickey ears with hat big on back, second tie DIY Mickey ears. Both times had own writing/sayings. Had no issues at all, some CMs even commented how cool they were. Shouldn't have any problems.

Thanks everyone- I am going ahead with the t-shirt iron on. This was my own design (not one I requested from a DISigner). I wouldn't have taken someone else's work and had it printed professionally :). I was only trying to get my design printed in a more "permanent" way since I wanted the kids be able to keep them as keepsakes. Then I got concerned that even doing that might cause a problem. Anyway, iron-on it is! I have lots of ironing! Thanks

We wore our iron-on shirts everyday in the Parks without any problems. We were even stopped by folks on some days asking where we bought them. If you are worried about the durability of the transfers, AmyMickey (google it) sells the best transfers. I always use hers, and they stay without cracking or fading no matter how many times that I wash them. My kids outgrew theirs long before the transfers wore out. The Mickey Head Tie Dye shirts are also great looking and long-lasting (http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1210609&highlight=tie+dye). I had never done tie dye before, but it was really easy and my youngest is still wearing my oldest's hand-me-down shirt from three years ago. HTH! :goodvibes

Thanks! I did order a BUNCH of transfers from Amy. I can't wait to get them in and start ironing!

If you are buying the iron on transfers then you should be fine with that. as who ever is selling the Disney transfers should have permisson to sell them to you. see people in the parks all the time with shirts that match and were home made for sometimes large groups or family reunions

canopynut66: just so you know, Amy is selling blank iron on transfers, not ones with DISigns on them...

I have been wearing shirts (including the rest of my family) using DISigns from many of the current and past DISigners on this forum. The only comments I have received from CM's have been positive and asking where they can get the DISign. :thumbsup2 There are directions on how to make your own shirts in the FAQ sticky. As Marion said, AmyMickey sells blank transfers, not DISigns. No one is allowed to sell Disney DISigns and how people get away with it on Ebay & Etsy confuses (and angers) me.:confused3 Especially when they are DISigns that were made by someone on this Forum. So iron on your DISign and have lots of fun on your trip.:goodvibes:hippie:Penny

Thanks everyone! I finished designing all the shirts (6 days worth) so for a family of 6, I have a lot of ironing to do!

so can I thread jack a little? I'm new here. Can some one tell me how the easiest way to make a t-shirt once you down load the image? Do you print it at home or have it printed at Kinko's or some thing. Then do you iron it on your self? Is it easy to do? Do you need anything special?

TIA

take a look at the How To sticky at the top of the forum for pointers.

the big issue is that the professional companies are producing unlicensed materials and that's a bigger no no than copyright -- and this isn't a copyright issue anyway

Copyright has fair-use provisions--and a person making using a personal product falls into that coverage -- but producing licensed material when unlicensed is counterfeit.
