SSB's DS Branch (12) is in a 105 team week-long AAU baseball tournament in Cooperstown, NY this coming week. I have only been there once for a few hours as part of a driving trip and wondered if anyone has spent time there and might have any advice for me? My son stays with all of the other teams in a main campus area, but I rented a house in town for the week for the family. It looks like a neat part of the country, and hope to have some activities outside of the games (average two games a day).

Thanks for any input! :)

I don't know that I'd call the area interesting. :) There's really not a whole lot to do. Howe Caverns is fairly close by. Besides the museum, not much else. We didn't really venture too far though, I have to admit.

It's a very cute little town (stress little) in a beautiful part of NY. The Baseball Hall of Fame is there, obviously. There's also the Farmer's Museum, an art museum, Glimmerglass Opera, boat tours of the lake, a winery, Ommegang Brewery, some cute restaurants and bars and shops. We've been several times and really like it.

We spent a few days in Cooperstown -- other than the Baseball Hall of Fame, which we spent two days at we visited:

1) The Farmers' Museum http://www.farmersmuseum.org/

2) Hyde Hall http://www.hydehall.org/

3) We also played mini-golf around there somewhere.

We just enjoyed the atmosphere of the town. It's very beautiful and had an old-fashioned feel to it. There was a fun 50's style diner downtown and a handful of good restaurants and cafes on Main Street.

Dh and ds are thinking about going up for 4th of July weekend. hotels in cooperstown are high. Is there a town nearby we could stay in that would be cheaper and not far from the baseball museum?

When we visited the HOF we stayed in Oneonta and drove to Cooperstown. If I recall it was about a 30 minute drive.

We stayed the night in Albany. I LOVED Cooperstown. It was charming and the lake setting was beautiful and I fell in love with Doubleday Field! My dream job is to work at the museum.

I would love to go back and spend more time there.

We looked into going there at the end of June or September and I noticed that ALL the hotel rates were literally HALF during the winter that they are during the summer. :scared1: Seems that there are lots of kids playing there in tournaments during the summer so the rates go up. We decided to go in September instead and combine it with Niagara Falls, since Cooperstown is about halfway to Niagara for us. If the time of year is not important to you, go in the winter!

We go often, because hubby is a baseball nut. There is a place called http://www.flycreekcidermill.com/ that we really enjoy visiting. We were there just a couple weeks ago when camping in the area. It's a beautiful area, although I don't find much to do in the actual town, when it's not Induction weekend. We park a bit out and walk all over, since parking in town is terrible. Lots of lakes in the area. Howe Caves is having their big is a great place to visit. We get in for free because of some family ties, so we go often. I don't think it's all that close, to Cooperstown, but I guess if you aren't from the area it is.

Thanks for everyone's advice... we did many of the things mentioned including Fly Creek Cidermill twice, the breweries, and more. It was a very fun time!

Glad you had a good time, Bob. :thumbsup2

I was just wondering if you could explain how this worked?

My son plays AAU ball also, and I just heard the other day this is what we'll be doing next year, too. How did your son like staying in the "dorms"? How did you arrange the house rental? Was it more cost effective than a hotel room?
