So we used cooling towels in the parks during this last trip for the kids to keep them cool....one thing that annoyed us was the plastic container they come in.

Has anyone just put them in a zip lock bag to save room? We would still have to get them wet once and a while but wondering if really carrying the hard plastic shell is the only way for when we are in the parks.

We always wind up leaving them around our necks/shoulders, or putting them into a pocket if dry and we don't feel like we'll need them.

Same, although I don't see why a ziplock wouldn't work, OP.

We just don't need them on the kids all the time...but those stupid plastic cases take up room and can be a bit annoying when trying to get back in the containers when needing to get on the bus or something.

We used a ziploc bag the last time we used the towels...no problems. Just make sure to take them out at the end of the day, rinse them out and let them dry. Otherwise, they'll start to smell.

I only use plastic container to store them in at home. We have several Frogg Togg towels. I use them all summer when I am on deck or working in garden too. When in the parks I'd put them wet into a bag, put in fridge night before and they would still be cool when we needed them.

Definitely this. We used them this past week (HOT) and we just laid them outside at night to dry after rinsing and put them in plastic bags during the day.
