We found a really neat market/grove in Vero Beach called Hale's.

They have THEE best fresh squeezed OJ and grapefruit juice on the planet. They have free samples of both.
They also have a variety of great looking produce from tomatoes to bananas.

It's a fun place to visit, poke around, and of course have some OJ!

We bought some OJ & grapefruit juice for the room, plus got a catalog for mail order.
You can mail order some incredible looking produce! :thumbsup2

Hales is great. Unfortunately, they were closed that last time we were there in August (off season). We'll be there next month. Hope they will still be open.

Hope you're having a great time.

When we were there last summer the place was closed, for good it seemed, the buildings were run down and there was construction all around. Is this a new location....can you pin it down compared to the old one? We will be thrilled to buy Hale OJ again!!!

We're happy to have found Red Hill Groves that's in Orlando, near the airport, but they are now closed for the summer as well. I think they open at the end of October.

Yikes! We were there a couple weeks ago and it was in full swing.

Coming from the resort-
Over the bridge, take a right on RT 1. About 1/2 mile on right.

Is this the place you are thinking? Our GPS had another location, so perhaps there are two locations?

You are describing the location that's about where we're familiar with....this is great news, and we'll be seeing for ourselves in just a few weeks. Thank you for the heads-up! Really, last summer...there was no Hales, it was definitely closed. Across Rt. 1 there seemed to be an office of the Hales Company, but not a retail store.

I don't know much about GPS, but did the other location seem close to this one?

I didn't pay much attention to the other location since this is the one the CM described.

The CM did indeed say it may be closed.
I'm thinking along the lines of DisDaydreamer--> that it's seasonal? :confused3

hale's was open in one location. And they did close. Then they annouced (see tcpalm) that they'd reopen in their new location and be open year round. Also that they'd be carrying local 'organic' produce.

Great!!! Wonderful news, thank you! When you go into Disney's VB resort, you see the wonderful mural of a different time in Florida, the orange groves and the orange packing crates. I was sad to think that development was so bad that the oranges couldn't exist anymore. I had heard that the hurricanes so spread the canker that the citrus industry was just about wiped out. I hope that's not true. We've been buying Hale's oranges for at least 10 years to send to family and friends, it was such a treat to think that "our" VB home was so close to the store.

Thank you Maistre Gracey for bringing the topic up! :worship:

Sounds like Hale's is an original. Yes the oranges and juice are fantastic!

Here is a post of mine from a couple week back before we visited VB.

Rob, It looks like they might have closed the stores down when they sold the business. The original store in Sebastian has opened back up after remodeling in November.

From TCPalm...

Groves landmark Wabasso store reopens today

WABASSO — Residents will get their first taste of fresh Hale Groves orange juice from the Wabasso store today as the landmark building reopens.

The store closed its doors in 2006 and underwent renovations when Hale Groves announced a partnership under the new ownership of Southern Fulfillment Services.

The store's grand opening was supposed to happen on Monday, but was delayed until today, executives at Southern Fulfillment Services said Monday.

Company Vice President Alex Brown said the business would operate under the name "Hale Groves River Market."

"We're working through a couple of issues with they county, but they're all very technical," Brown said. "Obviously, we're very excited about the opening."

Brown said as he was preparing Monday for the reopening, a local resident drove to the store just to thank him for bringing back the business.

"That's really an interesting sentiment because this place is such a big part of history," Brown said.

Polly and Steve Hale Jr., who used a shed behind their home to pack the fruit for shipping, opened Hale Groves as a fruit stand along U.S. 1 in 1947. Their first mailing list was made up of friends, relatives and customers who stopped at the stand to buy fruit.

Since then, Hale Groves has sold Indian River citrus and gourmet food across the country through catalog and Internet marketing. At one time, Hale Groves was one of the largest gift fruit shippers in the country.

Citrus diseases and urbanization may have contributed to the company shuttering secondary locations on Beachland Boulevard and 580 U.S. 1 in 2004. Both were considered landmarks.

After Hale Groves announced its partnership in 2006, all stores closed and the Wabasso location underwent extensive renovation.

Store location and hours: 9255 U.S. 1, Wabasso; 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Yes, they were closed for a while but reopened after they redid the whole store and will now be open all year.

It took them so long to reopen and it doesn't look that different from before but they do have some decent prices on produce.

FYI-I have sent Hale fruit to 3 people and each had problems with the quality of the fruit.

I'll have to check out the organic produce. Publix is so hit or miss with their produce (I shop at the one just up the street.)

Learn something every day.....I wasn't aware of the ownership changes at Hales. For several years I ordered the grapefruits during the winter just to feel like I was getting "a little bit of home" in the snow!

They did have a very nice retail store out by the mall on SR-60 but it looks like that may not exist any more.

We were so happy in March to see that our beloved Hales was open again. The OJ and Grapefruit juice are something we never miss on a trip to Vero. The location on 60 is closed. We usually buy our fresh produce at Jong's up the road from Hales.:thumbsup2
