I am a veggie who is trying to plan snacks to take into the parks. We are flying, so that greatly limits our options. I would love to take cheese and greek style yogurt cups, but will need to keep them cold. Are hard sided cold packs allowed on the plane? (These are not the blue gel packs, but hard plastic.)

No liquids or gels with a volume greater than 3.4 oz. are permitted on the plane. They have to fit in a 1 quart zippered plastic bag for inspection at the security checkpoint. If the gel packs that you have fall within those guidelines then you can bring them onboard.

I'm not sure about the yogurts. They could also be considered liquids. I've never tried to take any thru security.

Why not just place a grocery order once you get into Orlando? It might be easier than trying to keep your snack choices cool on the trip down.

ETA: Total liquid volume permitted per passenger is 3.4 oz as per the TSA website. http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Yogurts would not be allowed. Gel packs are not allowed either. I have frozen grapes and used those as the ice cubes. Food items that cannot hold it's shape outside of the container (cottage cheese, yogurt etc) is NOT allowed in a carry on. If you do not have a rental car, your best bet is to look into a food delivery service like Garden Grocer.

Anything frozen solid is allowed:

http://www.tsa.gov/311/311-carry-ons.shtm

Frozen items are allowed as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening. If frozen items are partially melted, slushy, or have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they must meet 3-1-1 requirements.

Frozen gel packs are only allowed for medication. You cannot inspect a had side container so TSA will have them thrown out.

That refers to the foods themselves, NOT inedible substances. The only way that you can carry any kind of inedible-content ice pack through security is if it is being used to cool things that fall under the medical supplies exception, such as insulin or human milk.

OP, you can use frozen food as a cooling agent, or you can carry ordinary ice in ziplocs. If you carry ordinary ice, then you must dump it before entering the security line, and then get a new supply from an airside food vendor once you cross through. Ordinary ice is allowed on the plane; it just isn't allowed through security unless you are invoking a medical exception.

Being on a special diet does not count as a medical exception for the liquids rule unless you are on the diet for medical reasons and the nutrients you need are not available from ordinary food sellers. Special liquid foods in this context mean things like baby formulas, prescription liquid diet products for those who cannot eat solid foods, or canned nutrient supplement drinks such as Ensure, Boost or Glucerna -- things marketed as nutraceuticals.

Are you checking a bag? There are some food products my parents can't find in Florida, so I bring some with me when we fly to visit them. I freeze them, and put them in a soft sided bag meant to keep hot things hot/cold things cold and put it in my checked bag. Being in cargo, means it stays cold during the flight. You should be able to take the cheese and a freezer pack easily in checked. Yogurt, I'm not sure about how messy that might end up being.

We will be going to Disney Vero beach in may I want to bring some meals down with me so can I bring pasta sauce with meatballs that is frozen solid
In a gallon ziplock storage bag in my carryon?

I doubt pasta sauce will be let thru security. I would put that in a tupperware container then in a ziploc bag in checked luggage though.

Cheese is one thing, but the yogurt isn't going to be possible.

Honestly, I'd just rent a car for a day and take a run to Whole Foods or even Publix (we were QUITE happy with their vegetarian selections there), rather than pack your stuff from home.
