Cool-mist, budget friendly humidifier...

My sinuses and skin has really gotten bad since I've have flipped on the gas heat! My Dr. suggested getting a cool mist humidifier...after looking online I'm
totally confused with all the choices that are available! If anyone can give any feedback and recs, I would love to hear them I'll be running it at night, in my bedroom while sleeping..noise doesn't bother me..I sleep with a fan! Thanks

I have the Crane Drop cool mist humidifier...some places it's around $45, but I got mine last year for $20-$25 so maybe use Google to check prices. I got mine at Home Depot or Lowes.

This is the one that I have as well. Keep your receipt and box though. Mine has had to be replaced by Crane 3 times in a year and a half. They just suddenly stop working. I also buy the separate water filter so I can fill it directly from the sink.

So i also had the Crane, but then my pediatrician told me i should be cleaning it EVERY DAY, i was cleaning it once a week, and well lets say it was gross. I invested a little more in to this http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Germ-Free-Humidifier-HCM-350/dp/B002QAYJPO and we love it.

I still clean it once a week, but it isn't a gross and I feel better about the air my daughter is breathing in.

For the Crane you need to take it apart and wipe everything down. I would see black specks (mold?) and that red/brown slimy stuff (mold?) so i would wipe it all down with a disinfectant. i also was running a cup of vinegar mixed with water through it. There is a little mold (i think) on the top part that i can't seem to get rid off, still trying since i want to keep this as a back up humidifier or if i need one for another room now and then.

For the Honeywell I just wipe down the parts with a disinfectant about once a week. Because of the filter i don't run a vinegar water mix through it i don't want vinegar to get on the filter and feel like its always pumping a vinegar smell out. This one doesn't need to be cleaned (that's what i was told) but to be safe i take it apart and wipe it down and check for mold once a week.

see.. this is a big reason that hot mist humidifiers are more sanitary the heat and steam actually kill much of the mold and subsequent bacteria that will grow in cool mists..... that said, I used to run one when the kids were babies(kept it up and out of their reach 100%) and still ran a white vinegar/water run through it weekly to make sure no mold spores were living in there..... cool ones are just.....too much.

oh, I used to run a vinegar rinse thru for 10 minutes or so in a closed bathroom so I didn't have to breathe the vinegar mist but then again I like the smell ok

I ended up getting two..one for my room and one for my sons! The one in my room puts out a cloud of white mist, the one in my sons room doesn't! One is a Honeywell that states you will see the mist, the other one is a off brand that says you won't see a mist, so I'm now wondering..which of the two is better? I feel like my room seems to have more coolness/moisture in it than my sons room...so I'm thinking about returning his and getting one that you can see the mist! Is there pros/cons to each kind???

We ended up installing a whole house humidifier because we were tired of filling and cleaning the portable one. Man what a difference it made. The whole house is warmer. I use to keep the thermostat at 72 now I am able to set it at 68 and if feels warm. No dry skin or dry throats even the cats aren't so itchy. Its also better for the wood furniture because running a furnace will zap so much moisture the wood will contract. Much nicer to simply turn a switch in the winter to turn the humidifier on and the turn it off in the spring. NO maintenance required. So the fact I can turn back the temp and I am not having to buy filters mean I should recop our money in 2-3 year. Oh and it was $300 for the machine and installation.

Who did your install? The same company that would service your heater and AC, like atlas butler or similar?
This sounds very nice at a great price.
