My 12-year-old son put on his windbreaker this morning so he could walk the dog and it was too small so I need to go shopping. The problem is, now that he’s getting older with girls starting to show interest in him I think I should probably expand beyond whatever I see at Costco or find in stock at Old Navy.

The kicker is that he already looks older than most of the 7th grade boys at his school. He’s tall at 5’ 7”, thin, has a deep voice and has what my DH calls a baby ‘stache. I want him to look his age even though he wears men’s sizes now. He wears a uniform to school but gets to choose his own outerwear. We also need to get him to clothes to wear when he’s not at school.

He wants me to take him because he’s less than impressed by his dad’s wardrobe of ratty cargo shorts, t-shirts and sandals. I want this to be enjoyable for son and show him that there’s a world of options other than dry fit shirts, camp t-shirts, soccer shorts, jeans and New Balance sneakers.

I say take him and let him choose. If he just gets dry fit shirts and soccer shorts, so be it. That's basically what my DS (16yo) wears. He'll put on jeans or sweatpants when it's cool (temperature).

Hmmm.... you are about to enter a frustrating phase, when you buy clothes for your son and they hang abandoned in his wardrobe until he outgrows them 😂. Let him choose, without comment😉.

Ds16 just went to Marshalls with his friends😂. He pretty much wears joggers and T-shirt’s everyday. Fortunately he has dd16 and dd18 to help him out. Ds20 was a hollister/American Eagle guy, still is. He’s a khaki/button up/flannel kid. Both boys have tons of hoodies.

I’m not opposed to just dry fit and soccer shorts if that’s what’s cool. He asked me to take him shopping instead of his dad though because he trusts my judgment though and I want to do a good job. A girl told him that she likes him and he likes a girl so I’m stealing myself for the possibility of a first (chaperoned) date in the near future so I’m thinking about that too.

My DS 13 going on 14 absolutely does not care. If not for his sisters telling him to change his shirt because it doesn’t match he’d leave the house looking like a hobo everyday. 🤣

With him I keep it simple Levi’s in a variety of shades and T-shirts *I* like. Pretty much mix and match. But that’s because he won’t choose something. If your DS does express a like for a certain style I’d certainly let him have a say.

I also have a 12 year old 7th grader and since he skates, he wears a lot of those skater brands' shirts/hoodies and then joggers, athletic pants, and Vans shoes. Last spring, I bought him a $70 hoodie that he begged for (some rapper brand) and now he thinks it's ugly. :/

My 16 year old could care less what he wears, in fact I'm pretty sure that he intentionally picks shirts that don't match his athletic shorts on purpose.

The boys that my daughter dates lol - they tend to wear Hollister, American Eagle, Nike and Under Armour -- at least that's the sweatshirts of theirs that she ends up "borrowing".

On a side note - if he does start dating expect to "lose" a few of his clothes to the girl.

This is true, I wash and fold so many items I don’t recognize, from boyfriends, their friends, their friends boyfriends... With three girls and two boys, it drives me crazy, especially for items no one can identify. My sons lose their winter coat every year, plus sweatshirts.

Exactly this - I always wonder if the boy's moms mind that they are essentially buying clothes for other kids. At least with her girlfriends they usually Swap clothes so it seems slightly more equal. But the poor boys must never have any hoodies for themselves to wear.

My middle school students wear either jeans, soccer/basketball shorts, or joggers with t-shirts or hoodies. Oh, and slides with socks. Don't forget those!

My son wears Nike, True Religion, Adidas and Champion brands. That's it.
He is turning 15 soon, has like 5 girls who like him and come watch him play football. He is 6'1", with a mustache and beard at 14. As much as I would love for him to still be little, I can't delude myself any longer :)
I would let him choose

It’s true, my boys’ clothes disappear and my girls’ clothes multiply.

American Eagle, sports brands like Nike (good deals at Kohls). My kids are in 7th and still wear Old Navy clothes. It’s not unpopular here...

My 13 yr old is now taller than me, but much slimmer, lol. I mostly buy him shirts and hoodies from adult men’s in XS or S. His waist is small and he is still too skinny for men’s pants so I have had luck buying him size 16 Old Navy jeans and some athletic wear from Adidas and Nike, etc. I miss dressing him up cute in Gapkids, he no longer fits into anything there. He will tell me if he doesn’t like to wear something, but yet he won’t go shopping for clothes. So I have to do a lot of online shopping, and a lot of returns as a result of that.

Abercrombie, American Eagle and hollister have pants/jeans starting at a 26” waist, 28” in length.
