Convincing someone they need an ECV and also where to rent Offsite

If you do convice her to use one I recommend renting off-site from Deckerts. They will deliver and pick up at your hotel and have much nicer ECV's than the ones Disney uses. Deckert's number is (714) 542-5607

my sentiments exactly:thumbsup2

SUCCESS!!:cheer2:

I called my mom after speaking with a very friendly man at Deckert's and gave her the information and she is agreeing to use it and is thrilled they will deliver it right to the hotel so she does not need to worry about transporting it.

THANK YOU so much for all the help/ insights/ 1st hand accounts you provided. They really made me feel empowered to take action and I am so glad we can now enjoy this trip with grandma!

thats great Nicole...you will absolutely love them...I use them all the time...

I am thrilled for you!!
I have not used Decerts, I have always rented from disneyland , do any of you know how far out I would need to call them to reserve a chair? we go in December.

how much was it was it cheaper then getting it from the park?
were gona be there 5days

Jade: the last time I went I rented from another company--OC Medical Supply. Their scooters appear to me to be newer and in better shape than Deckert's. I believe they charged me $40 a day.

Their phone number is 714-956-4690.

I have also rented from Deckert's and their service is good--just felt that their scooters were "worn" looking. (One even had something spilled on it when I got it that I had to clean off.)

It makes me sad that someone who could use the comfort of an ECV vehicle would feel insecure about using one because of what strangers think.
If you are overweight or have an invisible condition, or it would just make your life easier, you should use one!! DL is a big park . here is what I think when I see the evc's being used in DL ,"hey, you have the right idea! my feet are killin me and you look fresh as a rose!"
My opinion, I dont think as many people think about it as much as you think they do. really. At least I dont. Its no ones business!! do what is right for you!
And OP tell grandma that the grand kids are really looking forward to riding on Grandmas lap on the evc in DL!
I think most people have nothing but compassion for someone who may need an evc or a wheel chair and still braving the crowds at DL.
I hope grandma changes her mind even if its just knowing that it will ease the minds of everyone else so they wont stress on Grandma at DL.
Good Luck!:moped:

We just got back and I rented from a place near Anaheim called a scooter-r-u. It was $175 no tax and $45 delivery fee because we were staying at the Marriott vacation club in Newport Beach which was 20 minutes away. The guys name was Gerry and he was very nice. There phone is 877-697-7725. If your staying in the Anaheim area, they might not even charge delivery. It was the best investment (due to leg surgery) we made. Have fun!

Also she doesn't have to use it all the time. I went once with a person who used one and they didn't use it all the time. He would use it to get from area to area and then walked from ride to ride and on to the rides. That worked great. He had bad knees and it was a life saver for him.

This is how I would sell it to her.... Tell her that she can just use it to move between lands, to and from the Hotel etc, that way she can save her energy for the rides. Once she gets to a given area she can parkup and just ride and have fun like everyone else, that way she doesn't have to feel she is getting any underserved special treatment (despite the fact we all know she deserves all the special treatment).

Hi all,

OP here. Just noticed that my thread was back. Wanted to thank everyone again for all the help and info given here. My mom LOVED having the ECV at Disneyland. For the 1st time in a LONG time, she wasn't catching her breath trying to keep up with everyone else, WE were the ones eating her dust!

For the person asking about rental costs, I think Deckert's charged us $150 for 5 days, which included delivery and pick up from hotel. I believe that is better than the per day park rate (which is $40 or $45 a day I think) AND we could use it in Downtown Disney.

That said, while the customer service at Deckert's was fine, the scooter my mom got did not hold a charge as long as it should. She found it running out of juice every evening and luckily brought her cord so we could plug it in and get it enough of a charge to get back to the hotel. This may have just been our bad luck (or maybe we logged more miles than we thought!) as most people report good experiences with Deckerts but I thought I would share our experience.

Thanks again everyone!

Basically a person has a certain amount of energy available to them daily. If they relax during the day the amount of energy available wil increase; when they sleep at night they recharge their system,

However, when in pain energy is used up much faster than in normal conditions. If you become exhausted, with by what you have done or, more importantly, what you have done while in pain your system will not recharge to the original energy level overnight and you are starting the next day with a lower amount of energy available.

Please ask the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!

And a mild word of warning. I'm not sure about DLR, but at WDW if you rent an ECV from Disney one of the things you sign is that there will be no passengers. This is actually a safety measure; the Disney ECVs weigh about 200 pounds and if someone (such as a child) accidently hits the drive lever (which is not hard to do) it can slam into someone or a wall, either way causing serious injury. Also, if Security catches you more than once they will impound the ECV and you will also forfeit your deposit.

In the past 4 years I have taken my aunt and cousin to WDW. My aunt has MS and has good days and bad days. Our first trip, My aunt got tired very easily.

I am a get up and go and with two 8 year olds and a 2 year old (ages at the time) it was tough on me to keep her rested and the kids in line.

In August I took them back to WDW and this time we planned to rent a ECV. My aunt did not want to spend the extra money but agreed the wheelchair would be helpful. We got in at 3 so headed to the parks the first night. My aunt got the wheelchair but found it difficult to wheel her self around and our then 11 years old could not help. My back hurt so much after driving for 18 hours and pushing her around, I was begging her to get a ECV for the rest of the trip.

What a difference that made. We got to do so much more with little breaks and when DD got tired she got to ride with her aunt.

My aunt said at the end of the trip she would never think twice about renting an ECV again.

I totally agree with the above. I can somewhat understand how your mother feels however, the couple of times i have ended up renting an ECV I felt like people were judging me, but I quickly got over that. Had I not been in so much pain I would have preferred to walk, but sometimes you gotta do whatch gotta do to survive the trip. My view of it was, well real quick, I was hit by a car (I was a pedestrian), so I was in a wheelchair for a time, graduated to a walker, then crutches then my own two feet. . . for me when I have had to use it I feel like I am going backwards and losing my own "freedom", make sense??? so talk to her and ask her if that is how she feels and reassure her it is not losing anything, it is just going to make it easier on her and maybe let her know you are suggesting out of concern for her enjoyment of the trip! Good luck!

pooh68 thats so sad im glade you recovered. Im sorry to have brought this back from the dead i guess i seem to do that offten lol. The reason im useing one isnt even found by docs yet and its been almost three years.
I was at work um 1st day after all day and lots of fighting with the boss (who got fired becosue all her fighting she did with me and like every one else in my place.) well I was walking trying to get to my car. I was gona have to wait two hours for my mom to get done who wa sin the office with the witch who was yelling about everything that day. well it got dark and quick this is out in the desert and stuff so I slipped on a pile of rocks.
i sprang it that was seen imeditly. but when recovering my son was rambunchious on the bed. falling on both legs. The doc still sees nothing but now if i walk just the slightest to much. It hurts.
Has been getting worse but still doc sees nothing
long story sorry. I am sorry to all those who have invisbule illnesses. But no one should be ashamed if they need something. I was so scared and was looked at oddly in WDW when we went i had a wheal chair. but this time an ECV will help alot. wish i would of got one last year in DL

We keep telling my grandma that when we go next year (if she still is able to come by then) that we are getting her a scooter, but shes just like NO NO NO :furious: ....... she is the same way about a handicap pass, even though she needs it and it makes things alot easier for her she won't go for it..... She has a hard time walking and when ever we get a closer spot with my grandpa's pass she last SO much longer.... she use to be alright but she had a heart attack about a month ago and she gets tuckered out alot faster now!!! I hate how stubborn she is... cause its all for her own good.... but i guess she wouldn't be the same if she wasn't so stubborn :lmao: ......... either way we still need to find a way to get 1. get her the pass cause thats an everyday thing... that would perk up all trips and 2. convinc her for disney.... but i think shes starting to relize she will need something for #2 cause i think she is noticing how much more tired she is after 10-15 minutes!!

Sorry to rant lol.... just seemed like an ok thread to do it

About two and a half years ago my mother, then 91, was visiting me and I was going to take her to Epcot. I told her she had to use an ECV (that had belonged to my late wife). She told me she was perfectly healthy and did not need one.

I asked her if she could walk from her apartment to the nearest subway station (she lives in New York) and she told me she could if she had to. I then said how about there and back three times in a row. She looked at me as if I were crazy, but decided maybe I knew what I was talking about.

We spent eight hours in Epcot and she came out exhausted, even having been on an ECV. But she still tells people what a wonderful time she had there, and how she now understands why Judy and I loved the place so much.

I would suggest picking a place about a half mile from where she lives and asking her how she would like to walk there and back three times in a row. That is only about two times around the World Showcase Lagoon. Most people who go to WDW tend to walk about eight miles in a day, and I have seen people report as much as 12 miles using a pedometer. Disneyland Resort also requires the same amount of walking; if you have something you can compare it to that will help.

And also look at Question #6 in Post 34 in this forum.
