We can only afford a 150 point contract right now and that doesn't get us alot of time, does it?
you mentioned you are a family of 4. Your set. WHen DVC sells these lower point plans, its for 4 or less people. (we have 5 and that didnt work.- i added on before BCV sells out). I think that would get you 5 days (sun-thurs) in a 1 bedroom unit per year (no fri or sat- too expensive!)
Last year when we were deciding, I did the math. I came up with around the same % savings that DVC is advertising- 70%.
Yes, its up front money- but it's "Anyway money." you will be spening that ANYWAY over the next few years (no, i'm NOT a Timeshare salesperson ).
I even did the math for deluxe resorts. When i did this last year, a week in Grand Floridian top rooms was about $5000. I looked at the point conversion chart, and someone who wanted a week in that top quality room yearly would need a $36,000 contract. do the math- 5 into 36 is a little over 7. so, putting 7 years of $ up front, would get that person the 7 years in the same room and the following 33 years after that free!
with the DVC villas, its better because you are getting a much larger living space for the points.
